205 Gti Ignition Barrel Issue

Hi guys,

So I went to start the 205 today and the key would only go into the ignition barrel two thirds of the way and stop. Would not go all the way in to its usual position.

Around two days ago it was fine, and key went in and turned first time.

I have tried wiggling the steering wheel and putting key in, but no joy. And tried using a bit of wd40 and still nothing. And tried the spare key!

Any suggestions please? ????

I think all it can be is the lock barrel disintegrating internally. Unfortunately you can't easily remove the barrel from the steering column without inserting the key and turning it, there are some external barbs holding the barrel in that only retract when the key is in the right position so you have some work ahead of you.

Ah no... is it not easy then to remove and replace a ignition barrel if I can not get the key in to turn it to the right position to remove it? How can I do it? Drill it out? Thanks.

It can be done if your pretty forceful with it. If you remove the steering column cowls you will see a bolt that goes into the barrel. You'll need to remove that first, then using a small punch or something like that, give the barbs a smack and they should retract into the barrel. Be careful not to distort the cylinder that holds the barrel though.

It maybe that once you have given the barrel a couple of well placed blows the key may go in and turn. Iirc the position the key needs to be in is marked with a line, usually between both the ignition points.

Will an ignition barrel only from a 205 work or will other ones fit also?

205 or 309 as far as i know but i stand corrected if a 405 will fit. GSF car parts used to sell a complete valeo kit, maybe a call to them or neat car parts might turn up what your looking for.

Hi,

Could someone give me some info or guide me as to what I need to do to remove my ignition barrel if I can't get the key in to turn to the position I need to remove.

What do I need to drill out? And where are the pins located?
