Help Diagnosing A Gearbox Problem - Can't Select 5Th.

Recommended Posts

I would really appreciate some help diagnosing a gearbox problem. The car is a 1991 1.9 GTi with a BE3 gearbox. On the motorway after a couple of hours at steady speed, it jumped out of 5th gear but went back in ok. It did this a further 2-3 times then 5th was unable to be selected at all. All other gears, first to fourth and reverse are fine with no issues whatsoever.

What should I check and any ideas on what might be the issue?

Thanks.

Could be the Selector ring has pulled off the hub, Odd this one as I've done 2 in the last 4 weeks and not had one for a couple of years before that, if your around tomorrow I can have a look and have loads of those in stk

Thanks Miles for the quick reply.

The issue is that the car was sold and collected today and this has happened to the new owner on the way home. I'm absolutely devastated :( So I can't see the car in person but I'm very keen to find the issue if I can. When you say the selector ring could have pulled off the hub, what exactly do you mean as I'm not that familiar with the gearbox? Do you have a picture?

jack the left side up as far as you can then pop the end cover off.

Thanks again Miles. Reading back through the archives, some similar threads suggest the gear linkages could be at fault and even the gearbox oil level. I'll get the chap to check these and report back.

With the selector ring, is it the 2x nuts that would need tightening? Again the archives seemed to suggest this might be a possible cause.

Linkages or oil has nothing to do with it at all nor the nuts that hold the shaft on unless the nut has undone but I have never seen them that bad before, The ring needs replacing, Dead easy

OK Miles thanks.

I'll get him to take the cover off and have a look. He admits he's not too mechanically minded so I'm guessing he'll book it in to a local garage to get it done. I take it it's not a job for a specialist only? Also, do you sell the parts or would they come from Peugeot?

Hi

A garage I doubt would have a clue as most now just change out parts or remove the box and charge allot for what really would take no more than a hr's work, you are talking mechanic's here so you do really have to be careful.

Parts you can buy new from Pug, still used the BE box, or used which I have
