James_K 6 1 Cars Posted February 25, 2017 I have rust bubbling through behind my rear arch, so this morning I took the rear wash bottle out to see if I could get to it. I was surprised to see both the inner arch and the outer panel were stuffed with glass fibre insulation, which seemed to be a wick for moisture. Is this normal sound insulation or has someone bodged it in there? Seemed odd to me, just curious.
jackherer 543 Posted February 25, 2017 That's not standard, I'd get rid of it ASAP.
Gaz205 50 Posted February 25, 2017 It could be soaking up the road water being thrown up between the skins if the sealant has failed? Ultimately will cause the same if not worse corrosion I would imagine
James_K 6 1 Cars Posted February 25, 2017 Thanks both, I've pulled it out on that side at least. I can't imagine why anyone would want to stuff it there in the first place, maybe to keep the boot warm! It has certainly lead to worse corrosion than there would be otherwise. jeremy 70 Posted February 26, 2017 Most likely used it to deaden sound. May have had a large sub in the boot or a loud back box on the exhaust.

Leslie green 104 Posted March 22, 2017 Saw some fiberglass type insulation in my 1991 gti too on the filler neck side so id think it was there from new ,don't see why anybody would put some in later .
