Group A Rally Spec Front And Rear Brakes

Anyone know what brand / part numbers of brakes were fitted to factory spec Group A 1.9 rallycars ? - been offered Lockheed CP2361 closed back 4 pots for front ???

This type of caliper was fitted to early 1.6 group A cars, I dont think that they were fitted to the 1.9 factory cars.

The rear brakes were AP 2 cylinder calipers ( no mechanical handbrake.....) The discs on the rear were from the front of a 305 van.

Hmmm going back 20ish years I think they were about £1200 and pads were £240

Lost that Peugeot price list years ago though

NB think closed back were for gravel but memory etcetc

thats typically known as an escort forest caliper iirc.

 

ds2500 are about 130 in that shape, the 5100 series open back forged caliper used by the 106/saxo cup uses the same pad, as did the 206 cup alcons.

unless you're building a historic spec car and they're restricted on the caliper, id get something more modern.

At least two 4 pots calipers were homologated for the front of the 205. The Alcon, and what's commonly known as the AP "Forest" caliper. These were fitted to alloy bells and flat discs.........although, the forest AP does fit 1.6 discs on a 1.6 hub.

The rear was a bit of a miss match though. The choice was either standard or........

Peugeot 305 solid front disc machined down to a diameter of 246mm. AP CP3177 2 pot caliper with 36mm diameter pistons. The hub was made from a machined down rear drum in order for the standard axle pin and replaceable bearing to be used. The caliper brackets were specially made. The discs were mounted on the inside of the rear hub, and the M12 socket head bolts that held the disc to the hub were long enough to be used as the wheel studs. I'm in the process of building this setup...........slowly. The fronts I have already sorted

wonder why they bothered turning the 305 disc down, they could have just used a standard 1.9 disc? or was it pre 1.9 ?

 

36mm is a fair increase over the 30mm pistons.

 

using drums as hubs to have cheaper replaceable wheel bearings is a neat idea, though they're quite a bit smaller than the 1.9 bearing.

Yes, it was pre-1.9 B666 RAC was one if the first 205 Group A cars, so 1984 ish.

The Group A cars were a fairly basic setup. Advanced in their time but 33 years later on, you could probably build a fairly identical spec car in your garage at home.

I would double check and confirm the diameter of the rear discs, the Group A beams that I have rebuilt all use the standard diameter 305 discs ( 265 m/m dia ? ) If you do use smaller diameter discs, the mounting bracket for the calipers will have to be remade to suit.

I have the setup sheets from Peugeot Sport for Louise Aitken-Walker's car from the 1988 R.A.C. All the info on the car setup is on there......suspension, brakes, fuel tank, pump, ecu, wheels, tyres, castor/camber settings, ride height. The rear disc measurements are on it. The caliper brackets weren't standard, they were specially made. They must have machined them down to fit under the GpA 13" tarmac wheel

I rebuilt a rear beam from one of the 1985 works cars, the discs were from a 305 van and, as you said, the the caliper mounting brackets were specials. With the rear 265 m/m dia discs, 13" wheels ( revolution RFX's ) do fit. These wheels also fit over the front group A set up ( Alcons ) although spacers are required. The trailing arms were also machined to give negative camber.

I have a tarmac sump guard that came off B666 RAC !

I'd be interested in a pic of the bracket and what caliper they ran on the back? I service for a saxo that runs 17"s and we're struggling a little bit with getting a decent handbrake, I've got some discs on the way already.

The Group A 13" wheels were similar to the standard 1.6 Gti pepper pot wheel, only they were 7 x 13's

I'm building FIA App K Historic spec 1900 205GTI - Looking advice: If I choose to use AP/Lockheed Forest 4-POTS (CP2361) what discs do I use running 1.9 hubs /15" speedlines ? As I have BE1 gearbox and ZF plated diff with big drive-shafts am I correct thinking I cannot use 1600 hubs ?

You wont be able to use standard 1.6 hubs as the CV's on your shafts wont fit the 1.6 hubs. The 1.6 group A cars used uprights machined to give more negative camber ( -1.5 deg ) and they did not use a pinch bolt to secure the bottom rose joint pin, the pin being a tight fit into the upright. The hub had a spline profile to suit the 1.9 type CV's. I tried to identify the hubs, to see if they were a standard part, but couldn't identify them. I can only assume that they were 1.6 hubs specially machined to take the 1.9 type CV's. ( Bearing in mind that when the group A 1.6 cars were built, 1.9's weren't being manufactured).

The discs used were two piece, AP discs with bells with a deep offset to suit the 1.6 hubs.
