flyfisher 6 2 Cars Posted February 14, 2017 When my car was converted they purchased a citreon bx 16v I've got the engine in my car what I can't find out did they use the mi16 box as well the box I have is a be3 if it is a mi gearbox what speeds should be achievable in 1st 2nd and 3rd I did think I had a 1.9 gti be3 box but I'm not so sure now other than removing the box and diff cover that I don't want to do is there any other way I could find out I know it's not a 1.6 box cos it's got a to long 5th gear
jackherer 543 Posted February 14, 2017 (edited) I can't remember the exact number but you can do something crazy like 70mph+ in 2nd gear if you take it to the 7200rpm limiter with a 1.9 gearbox. Edit: I did the maths, 7200rpm with 195/50 15 tyres in 2nd gear (1.850) with a 1.9 final drive (3.688) is 71.2mph. An Mi16 'box will go to about 59mph in 2nd. Bakes100 20 1 Cars Posted February 14, 2017 205 GTi 1.9 Gearbox @ 4000 RPM (easier to measure than the limiter) 1st - 25 mph 2nd - 40 mph 3rd - 54 mph 4th - 69 mph 5th - 85 mph 205 GTi 1.6 Gearbox @ 4000 rpm 1st - 20 mph 2nd - 36 mph 3rd - 49 mph 4th - 62 mph 5th - 77 mph Xsara VTS / Mi16 Gearbox @ 4000 rpm 1st - 21 mph 2nd - 33 mph 3rd - 48 mph 4th - 63 mph 5th - 81 mph If it is a 1.9 box you will get about 95 in third on the limiter with an mi16 engine. If its got the mi16 gearbox you will get about 85...assuming your speedo is correct.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted February 14, 2017 You can sort of tell by the case, 8v has the reverse light semi enclosed in the Case, the 16v as it has more rib's the switch is completely stands out of the box, Mind TD cases are the same too
Slo 283 1 Cars Posted February 18, 2017 I've just bought a supposedly 1.8TD box can you tell if it is Miles?
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted February 18, 2017 No way of telling, it's only the 16v and TD case that is different, You can find the number code on front and as it looks original it should be good
Slo 283 1 Cars Posted February 19, 2017 This is stamped on it upside down on the front the digit on the right is a B
welshpug 1,661 Posted February 19, 2017 20CL08 you'll need to browse the gearbox listings on servicebox to find a match. its a be3, and you say from a 205 so I'd start there
Slo 283 1 Cars Posted February 20, 2017 I googled the code which brings up lots of links in french forums referring to the 1.8D gearbox so are they the same as 1.8TD? Im happy to see a reference to diesel anyway as going through the small hassle of cleaning this box up and fitting it to find out it was a typical 1.6/9 box would piss me off big time as the box on it now is spot on. griffo 15 1 Cars Posted February 20, 2017 (edited) 20CL08 you'll need to browse the gearbox listings on servicebox to find a match. its a be3, and you say from a 205 so I'd start there CL08 is associated with the Diesel Turbo XU7DT as well as the non turbo versions XU7D and XU9D. http://www.miamistu.co.uk/pug/GB/205N/2/22A95B.HTM http://www.miamistu.co.uk/pug/GB/205F/2/22A95A.HTM http://www.miamistu.co.uk/pug/GB/205F/2/22A96A.HTM Edited February 20, 2017 by griffo

welshpug 1,661 Posted February 20, 2017 i think that's probably the longest BE final drive ratio at 3.
Slo 283 1 Cars Posted February 20, 2017 (edited) Dont have a clue about ratios and final drive numbers is that going to be bad? Ive heard good and bad comments about the diesel box and turbo engine, i just want a little bit more range and better fuel eceonomy. If its too long ill look into gear swapping if thats possible or go back to the original box. Edited February 20, 2017 by Slo
welshpug 1,661 Posted February 20, 2017 its geared for 153 at 6k 70 would be 2750. with the spread of gear ratios there's roughly 30 mph between each gear with a 6k redline.
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted February 20, 2017 Higher the number the shorter the box, by shorter I mean higher revs for the same road speed. To be honest for the work involved I'd take the diff cover off and check the ratio stamped on the crownwheel. You know for sure what it is then. Good opportunity to reseal and fit new diff seals and speedo housing o-ring.
petert 588 Posted February 20, 2017 You could also take the side plate off and count the teeth on 5th gear(s). Together with the cwp ratio, you'll have a fair idea of what the box is. A small amount of work for the info gained.
dobboy 231 2 Cars Posted February 20, 2017 I think I have a big spreadsheet with all the codes and details/ratios etc of all the older boxes, I'll try find it tomorrow. Think I got it from the 106 Rallye owners site.

Oh that's far too high up, imagine a cti doing 153mph no me neither sod that, 70 at 2750 would be nice though. Good opportunity to reseal and fit new diff seals and speedo housing o-ring. That's exactly what I will do although I was going to strip it completely and rebuild it, just want to trial fit it first and see what its like in the flesh, theory is one thing practically its probably going to be absolutely s*ite got to try though. Is the box all sealed with just sealant or are there any specific gaskets? Ive got the diff seals and speedo o ring. Slo 283 1 Cars Posted March 2, 2017 Ok so that confirms its a d/td box then. Just got to clean it up and fit it to test how bad it is then. Will it be ok to fit the cover back on without sealant as original or will a smear of something be a good idea
