Low Profile Jacks - Anyone Used These?

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

Looking for a cheap-ish low profile jack and came across SGS Engineering

http://www.sgs-engineering.com/tjl2-2-tonne-low-profile-trolley-jack?gclid=CjwKEAiAz4XFBRCW87vj6-28uFMSJAAHeGZbtocoHAt4ycVsxFTgGA2jaTDhcZRWj4hhK4679u5GChoCXqvw_wcB

Anyone had any experience with this company's products?

I don't want to spend near £100 (or more) on light weight fancy version. As much I'd like to, I have more important things to spend money on.

I'd suggest a cheap hfrauds job and a lump of wood to drive on. Unless you spend nearer 100 you wont be any real quality for your purchase.

No experience with that particular one, but SGS stuff is normally alright.

However - that jack design looks a bit flawed to me unless all you want to do is jack up on the sills, as whilst the jack point is low, the main jack body isn't and thus surely you're never going to be able to slide that underneath a low car to jack up on the subframe or whatever.

For less than £30 I think i'd risk it, just make sure you always use an axle stand (£13 a pair from Halfords last time I looked if you're needing any).

I've got an SGS chainsaw and the on/off button broke; they sent a replacement FOC. Not used it enough to comment on it's quality, but it looks ok. Just make sure it's got decent Warranty and if it's crap send them it back.

I've got a quite a big low entry Jack and I still need to put the front wheel on bits of scaffold board I've cut to get to the subframe of my mini (and prob 205 too), to be able to pump the handle.

how low is your car Steve?

those cheaper ones look identical to the halfords ones.

I looked at it and thought exactly the same thing.

I saw the Halfords one. It's 50 quid, so more expensive than the SGS one

Let me guess, you need a trade card to get it for £28? Your link is for the same one I was talking about, and it says £50.

Few quid on some business cards from vista print and some old invoices and you are in business. How can you afford NOT to have one!!

I very rarely shop at Halfords. Is it that simple? What sort of old invoices?

None of those are really low profile jacks. You're still going to get caught on the gearbox/sump if trying to lift the car in the centre of the sub frame. We bought one recently from Costco that gets under easily from the front.

Well I don't really need an ultra low profile one, it's not for a lowered 205 or similar. I just bought a Saab 9-5 Aero the other day and as I was thinking about what I need to do on it before it takes over daily duties, then I realised it sits rather low and so I'd probably benefit from a lower jack (my crappy cheapo one needs replaced anyway). After I posted this I went out and had a check and it's 18cm clearance at the front lip and 15cm at the front of the side sill, so, a "normal" jack would actually be fine. Re-thinking things, I'd probably be better off getting something with a longer body that has a taller max lift, as with my Volvo I could only just get the wheels clear of the ground with my current piece of crap jack.

Ive got this jack...well the same one with different stickers on. It can jack a lowered (30mm ish) 205 up from the middle without needing blocks, it clears the sump standard depth sump.

The only issue is you cant get it very high and I wouldnt fancy using it on anything much heavier TBH.

Has served me fine for 2 years and good for a small garage as its pretty compact.

iv got one of the 3 tonne low profile jacks, it fits under my lowered 205 fine but is pretty heavy to move about and it dose seem to take a lot of pumps to get the car jacked up (unlike my halfords one), i phoned sgs and they said its just how they are.

Jamie, has yours got the twin piston design with 'rocket lift'? They say it should go to full height in just 9 strokes.

the rocket lift is only when there's no resistance against the saddle, they're no quicker in my experience when actually lifting a vehicle.
