To Cover Or Not To Cover?

Recommended Posts

surfer69

Hi everyone

Dilemma..I have a 205 gti 1.6 being delivered next weekend(cannot wait) but it's gonna be kept outside☹️.

I've had a few opinions on whether to cover it or not..some say cover others say give it good coat of wax and leave uncovered.

All opinions welcome.

Many thanks in advance.

IMO don't cover if it's left outside, the cover will trap damp and risks scratching the paint in the wind.

Thanks Anthony.

I think I'm gonna leave it uncovered.

If you're gonna wax and leave uncovered, put a coat of Autoglym Extra Gloss Protector on top, it seals the wax and will prolong its life.

+1 for not covering. Simply is not needed.

What about covering in a damp garage?

I was thinking that - no air bricks in the garage may explain the damp

Outside is better than damp garage.

Mine is under a carport next to a sheltered wall.

If it's gonna sit under or close to any trees for any length of time i'd use a cover and be mindful of it on rainy and windy days, and take the cover off for a few hours when you have dry weather...... I saw a fairly new Polo that was ruined by birds*it and tree sap recently.

I've got 3 covers I use, £10 shots from eBay, and they help keep the cars clean, and are a nice but baggy fit on a 205. My old CJ sat under one for months and I never really had any problems with it, just left the windows down a wee bit, and put a couple of those packets of dehumidifying pellets from a £1 shop in it (and checked/replaced them now and again).

I'm taking it out of the garage in the next hour or so, so we suggest a cover outside then? I don't have the tree issue

I would not personally use a cover outside. The constant movement caused by wind will make the cover rub on the paint. I've seen cars ruined in this way. Get a good coat of wax on it and then make sure you wash off any bird poo promptly.

It's pending a full respray... If that's the main concern re damaging the paint I would rather have it on just to hide the car. I just needed it out of my damp garage as it was condensing everywhere!

I just don't want to cause further corrosion issues

I forgot how long these cars are, I thought it would fit with the other 2 cars... Now I'm banished to parking on the road and an empty garage! ????

i left my old 205 in a damp garage for 2 years, 2 months after moving it i scrapped the car!

Do not leave it in a damp garage & if outside i would also leave it uncovered & if possible put it up off the ground & let a bit of air underneath it..
