1.9 Gti Xu9J1A Timing Help

Recommended Posts

superspanner

Hi all looking for some help, I have an 1991 1.9 gti which I believe has an Xu9j1A, changing the timing belt water pump at the weekend and unfortunately who ever has been at it before me has cracked 1 of the lugs off the case to stop the timing pin therefor lost timing I know school boy error not making marks tippex ect also wrong idler had arrived ???? therefor this weekend timing is getting redone.

Question is

1. Best way about setting the timing from scratch?

2. With the idler set up (the spring type) is there a ride and wrong way?

Any help would be muchly appreciated

1. Use a 10mm dowel or drill to lock the cam to the head as usual. If one of the lugs is still there, just make sure an 8mm dowel/drill fits snug against it.

2. Don't think you can possibly get it wrong.

If you have been sent the wrong idler ( tensioner ) there is a good chance that you have the wrong timing belt as well . The round tensioner is for later engines and uses a 114 tooth belt , the earlier 3 bolt fixing type uses a 113 tooth belt .The casting was probably broken when someone tried to tighten the cam or crank pulley bolt with a 10 mm dowel in the timing hole , buy a Draper locking piece that locks the flywheel .
