O.e Equivalent Exhaust Downpipe

Recommended Posts

AlexRS2782

Later this year I'm thinking of replacing the, retro, manifold back OMP exhaust I've had fitted to my GTI for the past few years. I'm probably thinking of using one of Miles' downpipe back stainless systems although the other option is going back to a standard setup as I currently have a decent centre silencer & rear silencer in storage that I could use.

In either case however it leaves me with finding a suitable o.e equivalent spec downpipe that has the centre split.

I could use the one I have running with the current OMP system, as it has the split in, but that pipe has been specifically modified & lengthened to fit / suit the OMP exhaust so I'd rather keep that as a complete manifold back system for ease of fitment either in the future or if it was sold on.

On that basis what are the current available options for a decent quality downpipe that has the centre split in?

Not a lot really as I would assume most pattern ones come without the splitter

The recent Walker ones have had came without

I have a full system on EBay

I searched for a while to find a new downpipe with the split. Eventually sent off to France and the pipe that turned up was a Walker one without the split. It's still in my garage never been on. I think you'll struggle to get a new pipe with the split.

Ah, balls. I had a feeling that could be the case :( That will teach me for not buying the one that came up for sale locally in Guildford about a year ago.

Might have a chat with Miles and see if he was a decent used one lurking in his spares when the car goes down in April. Either way I'm sure he'll be happy if I do change from the OMP exhaust as it will save him being deafened on the M27 every time I leave the car for a service / MOT

On a side note, I was surprised to find that even Miltek's "classic" system doesn't have the split either. I'd have thought they would have given the £££ tbh.

magnex or equivalent manifold it is then :D

I'm sure any half decent exhaust fabricator could reproduce something to replicate the original downpipe, IIRC someone like omp or magnex have done one in the past, I have a similar one on my gti6 made by magnex.

Stew looked at one of mine and he said to do it competitive it wouldn't be easy to replicate

Scorpion did the twin D/P's years ago instead of the split, It's not difficult to do just expensive due to whats needed and compare to say a 4 branch would work out cheaper in a small run, Even Janspeed bought Peugeot D/P's to mod to go with there system in the day with the divider extended slightly,

As said for the money you would think the Miltec system would be better than it is, with sleeved tailpipe which is the same idea as the Escort estate/Cab to make it more universal(Cheaper) which is why my system came about, I will get it up and running soon just no time

I got a Walker full system from Mister Auto and somehow ended up with two downpipes. One is now sat behind the sofa in the back room.

It doesn't have the split but you are welcome to my spare downpipe for free if you want it.

I've got one of those somewhere, I always thought they were very good, two separate pipes made of stainless steel that fit the available space and even fit without mods to an Mi16 in my experience.

It should be easier to replicate the Scorpion design, I wonder if anyone has ever looked into that?

A related but important question is whether anyone has ever back-to-back dyno'd new exhausts with and without the split to see whether it's actually worthwhile?

Theory says that it should make a difference, but seeing the two graphs overlaid would certainly prove whether it is or not.

It's definitely been tested and I've seen graphs on here but not for many years!

It would definitely be worth repeating the test, if someone was to replicate the original design or copy the Scorpion design they'd probably sell more if they had evidence it made a worthwhile difference.

Not tested but it's top end power it effects, I know my old 309 showed quite a difference top end without the split, the Group A ones had a longer split as did the Janspeed D/P's

I've got 2 or 3 of those at work but as ever to make them won;t be cheap on a small scale.

Interestingly, I managed to locate an OE style downpipe with the split (for a total £1...bargain) and rear back box, which I fitted at the weekend having had a magnex system on the old girl since I bought her six years ago. My personal experience is that she seems more eager at higher revs to pull and get to the red line quicker than she did with the magnex, which felt a little flat over 5000RPM compared to what it is now.

Also, its much quieter at cruising speed, which always helps when I am not trying to reach the red line.
