Buying The Right 205

Hi All,

 

This is my first post since joining, so I hope to get some advice. I had a lot of experience with 205 Gti's over the years and have built 2 x Mi16 and rebuilt a 1.6 Gti which was my first car. Not to mention owning several others inbetween. Saying that I'm no merchanic, just read how to guides and get my hands dirty.

 

Anyway, the reason why writing this post is I'm looking for a new project and have come across a 1992 205 1.9 Gti Auto. Now I know a little about these but not a lot... it has been stripped by it previous owner so no seats, boot, doors and a few other bits. However, it's said to have done 56k miles and the shell looks solid. The question I have is do I keep it get it right and sell it or convert it to manual?

 

The third option is avoid it like a bad smell??! It's worth mentioning it's £900. What else could I get for that money?

Is this the one by any chance? If so seems pricey as a project, doesn't seem to be much more than a shell requiring work and a respray, Not sure the mileage and service history are relevant to anybody wishing to keep the car, just for selling on. Won't be relevant to most of the parts once completed.

 

You're going to need a donor car I would imagine, so with a combined purchase price approaching 2k surely a more viable project could be found at that price?

 

If you already had a similar spec rusty car though I guess it would be a bargain.

Yep that's the one... I've got about a grand to get a new project. Haven't found much out their either! I don't mind tackling a little rust or dents etc just need to find a good place to start? I dont currently have a donor car either... what would you'd suggest?? Should I avoid this and look for something else?

I guess you need to establish the goal of the project, what's the end game? Keep or sell?

 

If it was to keep I'd happily take that on as a slow build over a year or two, body parts can be had very cheap if patient, engine and suspension is all there, majority of the interior can be had from a phase 2 base model with black dash.

 

Oh, and stick a bloody manual in it!

To be honest if you have about a grand it's likely to be difficult at the moment to find much that is viable. Depends really what sort of project you have in mind and wether you have an eye on what the finished article will be worth. It is a gti and does have the correct F5 to say so so if that is important to you it may be worth having for that alone, but may take a deal of time and expense to even source the parts at anything like reasonable cost. If you wanted to return it to original, start by pricing the missing air con bits.... ouch! If you want to build a modified or track car, perhaps start with a base model and modify this to your spec. Only you can decide. Also price what it would cost for transport alone. It's in Cornwall, miles from anywhere!

I'm looking for a keeper! Yeah it not going to be an overnight project just a evening and weekends build. I'm in no rush... the truth be told I'm not sure how I feel about it, huge project to get it back to standard. Which is what I want to do. I've priced to trailer it up to me at about £240? I did think that was about right but it's been at least 6 years since I've done anything like that. With the rebuild I'm not sure I would put the air con on it... and if I kept the car it would have to be manual! Although This is a 92 so CAT!? I'm really undecided and don't want to jump straight into the first thing that close to what I want.

 

Does anyone know how difficult it is to convert it to manual??

 

That or do I look at getting this;

You'll prob find that white one will go for considerably more than you're budget. Is that £240 inc,using fuel I guess? Trailer hire is pretty cheap. At that cost try Shiply and save the hassle?

 

I'd love air con and is something I want to fix on my 306 so depending on how much is left on it I'd look at keeping that. You'll prob find it has a cat for the Jap market, someone else will confirm, you'll be fine to remove it depending on registration date.

Are you on Facebook? On the group "Peugeot 205 owners club" a GTI6 205 has just popped up in need of restoration for £1k if that tickles your pickle.

Aaron, I've an 89 (G), white 1.6 with a 1.9 Mi conversion, which I've been toying with the idea of selling for....ages (but this is the year it probably really ought to go). Feel free to PM me if you are interested. It would be within budget. It's been off the road for about 6 years but it wouldn't take a lot of time or money to get it to an MOTable and usable/enjoyable state, though if you wanted it to be a better example it could be a much bigger project. In fact part of the reason it's been off the road so long is that I wanted to treat it as a long term project and get it to a really tidy standard, but then life got in the way and it just got sidelined.

I am being told by MOT centres that because it was registered in Oct 92 the car has to be tested with a CAT fitted.

Just find a sympathetic garage. I had a 93 with cat but removed the cat and never had any trouble getting it tested.

Aw thanks Steve I don't think I'll change my mind. This has been a long time coming now. Since my boy was born 3 years ago (and daughter a year ago) I have no time for cars. It's enough of a struggle just finding time to maintain the Volvo. Of course the dilemma has been do I keep it for the future in the hope that I can resume when the kids are older, maybe as a nice father/child project? And it feels like a massive mistake to sell it as is, make quite a big loss, right when values are on the up, and knowing I likely will never have another. But I have to let my head rule now, I need the garage space back, it's pointless keeping the 205 out there when someone else could enjoy it. So it's going.

My first GTI passed 2 MOTs with the cat internals smashed out!

 

EDIT: In fact, whoever owns K919 MML, now you know why you're failing those emissions tests
