Which Drum Brake Is This? Bendix Or Girling?

Recommended Posts

JR20516V

Little confused with what i have here on my 1.6 GTi [1990 Euro ].........the backplate shows a circle where the compensator is situated [base model Bendix? ]....also the bleed nipple into the rear cylinder is approx. 13mm which again tells me "base model"

However ....what is throwing me out is that when i got the drum off it has 40mm wide shoes thus 1.6 GTI [the base model is 30mm ]

Any tips to put me out of misery ?

cheers

I agree, with a 13mm bleed nipple then you have imo base model rear drums with the compensator built into the wheel cylinder.

Not all the base model drums were 30mm, I know that my mum's old 1.6 spi auto had 40mm rear drums with base model wheel cylinders & so had my old STDT.

Looking on service box there are actually quite a few bendix & girling brakes on various engine models with 180 x 40mm rear shoes.

Is your master cylinder a three or four port one?

dont think any 205 has a 13mm bleed nipple, it 'should' be a 19mm bore girling cylinder, m7 nipple 8mm hex.

m10 nipples are 11mm af, can't remember if any 205 has those

Thx for the replies guys.

Graham: its a 3 port

Mei: yes, you are correct....8mm hex. [a previous old post on here has had incorrect info ]

Re: the circle or oval shape into the rear of the drum where the compensator is situated.... i can see where i got confused here..... looking again it has circle at the very face of the rear plate ....however on top of that circle is an oval shaped item. According to that old post that was another way of checking if base or 1.6 gti rear drums.

Soooo............it appears these are correct Girling 1.6 gti drums in your opinion? Also if that is the case does it matter which 180x40mm shoes i purchase ? E.G. are the Bendix and Girling the same fitment. I am thinking of buying OE part # 424171.

Bog standard Girling.

The round hole types ,

if the tube nut and bleed nipple are both on the centre line of the circle, then Girling GTI,

if the tube nut and nipple are offset to each other from the centre line then Bendix base model

Base models on bendix rear brakes with the built in compensator definitely have a 13mm bleed nipple, along with a different back plate & oval shaped hole for the compensator to fit through.

Fantastico !! Girling they must be....happy as a dog with 6 tails !

One last Q................does it matter which 180x40mm shoes i purchase ? E.G. are the Bendix and Girling the same fitment or do they have different attachments?. I am thinking of buying OE part # 424171.

I stand corrected (by myself), it's the union into the wheel cylinder that's 13mm on the non-gti model drums where the wheel cylinder has the inbuilt compensator.

I'm guessing its an M12 thread where most aftermarket unions are 13mm af, o.e types are 11mm same as the M10.

Yes, the cylinders with a built in compensator have an m12 thread in them instead of m10.

No, base Bendix have a round back plate hole, base Girling have the oval hole.

Both are handed as well.

The bleed nipples arent 13mm on any cylinder i have ever seen.

The tube nut threads are 12mm though not 10 as in a GTI cylinder.

This comes up often maybe we should have an article about it ?
