Recommended Posts

idoari

Hi,

i currently restoring my car to original spec. i've searched the answer and couldn't find it.

what are the origianl color of the rear torsion bars? is it red or black?

mine looks original and it's black with a few yellow and white strips on it BUT i saw a lot of pictures in the past that those painted red. which one is it?

i know the crossmember tube is originally yellow. right?

if it's matter , i have a 1992 1.6 gti

thanks

Ido

The main beam tube (cross member) is originally yellow but it's not an off the shelf colour that I've found & best I managed to replicate it was by mixing yellow & red hammerite together.

I've seen quite a few repainted in plastikote yellow which is a brighter yellow.

I've never seen original torsion bars in a good enough condition to truly say what colour they were but on beams I've stripped the r/h bar which has the most protected part I've seen black and a dark (almost maroon) red.

The rings you've seen are to identify the torsion bars as left (two rings) and right (one ring).

a lot of the 205 bars were grey I think, but as Graham said most of them have been covered in so much crap and crust its hard to tell.

since i come from dry climate country, my crosstube is almost perfect - color-wise.

also none of the parts are rusty at all - even the torsion bars end are completely new looking.... ;)

the color of my torsion bar is currently black.

i did a little research now at turn out (almost sure) that it was black originaly however peugeot-sport offered a thicker torsion bar than standard that it was red - maybe that is why people painting theirs red.

thanks guys

New gti genuine tubes are black, but very early ones were mustardy yellow colour.

The bars I supply with my axles are powdercoated red oxide, which I suppose is as close to o/e colour as poss.

I have a pair of original 20mm PTS bars, they are similar to red oxide in colour, the early crosstubes (as Andy says) and the ones I have seen are all mustard in colour.

In which way do the torsion bars differ if they are handed? because as far as I know after market TB's are exactly the same side to side.

the original torsion bars are handed, need to mark the torsion bar and trailing arm so you don't get them mixed up,

It's because they will fatigue if you use a bar on one side then swap it to the other side, they start out the same.
