It's Running! But Not Well.....

Recommended Posts

kachel

I got my 1.9 dfz engine running after it didn't move for 3 years. I did some repairs and now it runs direct after starting. But it goes directly to 3000 rpm and after 4 seconds it dies when I do not hit the throttle. When I help the engine by keeping it above 1500 rpm it stays running. Under the 2000 rpm it does not run well.

Where to start looking for the solution?

I know two things aren't correct at the moment, the ignition is from a 1.6 and the vacuum hose from the ignition house to the inlet manifold is missing.

Classic signs of an air leak-races then dies

If you keep it running with throttle does the car move like it going off/on?

Blanking off the missing hose with duct tape would be a quick check (and cheap too lol)

As above sounds like a bad air leak to me. .

check the bolt on the inlet manifold that attaches the oil filler neck is secure.

If its loose It lets unmetered air in causing an immediate rise in rpm to 3/4000 revs. car usually dies shortly after due to excess air

Problem solved, it's running well! It was exactly like you described, the bolt from the oil filter neck was not secure and the hose from the brake system to the inlet manifold was missing.

Out of curiosity, what does the brake system do with the vacuum from this hose?

Ah, so it's not an essential issue

Not perhaps for running the engine, but you'd be alarmed at how long it will take to stop the car without the servo working!
