Gti Head On Spi Auto Block

Recommended Posts

MikeAuto

I've had a search but can't find a definite answer for this. I've got a low miles spi auto engine and a 1.6 gti head, would the gti head fit on the spi engine? I'm guessing the blocks are the same between the 2 engines?

yup same blocks, I think you will end up with quite a bit of compression so you'll need a recurved dizzy, ideal time to put in a longer duration cam.

I thought those heads were the same and the only the cam & springs were different.

The heads are the same, I put one on my 205 after asking the same question, you (petert) posted a reply and as you said it's just the cam and valve springs that are different. Look at the shape of the inlet ports because there's 2 types, I had to remove the inlet on the auto car I had and check before I pulled it off.

I have a head here from an SPI 1.6 auto & can confirm that the valves & inlet ports are visually identical to those on a GTI head but I can't state for 100% the combustion chamber in the head is the same between the two but looking on service box they share the same part number between the XU5M, XU5JA & XU9JA (0200 F2) minus valves so I would agree they are the same head.
