Oil Pressure Activated Rev Limit?

Recommended Posts

haze_mi16

Hi guys

Its just an idea i had, as i have just fitted a hobbs pressure switch to activate buzzer and/ or LED and i realised i have a Crane Hi-6 lying about (with Crane PS-92 Coil) which i could fit to my s1 mi16 which has a rev limit function...

Could this prevent any engine damage in case of oil surge?

im not sure if ill 100% be doing any track work but i thought it could be a good addition to protection....

Is this a good idea or am i missing something?

I doubt it will help as it doesn't prevent oil starvation, whilst a warning light indicating impending doom is good, IMO you need to address the issue head on.

You could use it to cut ignition and as such the load on the bottom end, but im nit sure if you'll have already damaged the shells before (sometimes the engine could drop oil pressure for a split second, so the cutout could be a nuisance rather than a saviour)

A sudden ignition cut mid corner is likely to have interesting consequences in terms of handling, i.e. lift off oversteer.

I do that with a Haltech on my race car. I think I have it set to an RPM limit of 2000 if oil pressure is <30psi. The oil pressure is logged continously however, with 0-100psi sender.

Slightly off topic , I was looking for oil pressure switch last year , found one from B class mercedes , A0051530528 1.5 bar. 5 eur.

thanks for the responses. Yeh i would certainly not consider a complete ignition cut! would not be nice when swinging round a corner to have the power steering, power assisted brakes and engine die, all while in a lift-off oversteer!

but the rev limit seems like it could be a worthy cause, to fill in the time between deciding on other anti-surge measures...
