205 Gti Fuel Tank Breather Issue

Recommended Posts

Hello all I just wanted to share something with you that has helped me resolve an ongoing issue with my 205. I have been experiencing stuttering and awful cutouts when going around a corner and then giving it WOT.

At first I did the obvious like more fuel, new plugs, new fuel pump and reconditioning the injectors but still no joy. It was only when speaking to a friend that he asked me to open the fuel cap after a drive and there was a massive "suck" of air as I unscrewed it. I researched it and found that there are two breathers

One large diameter hose that is for when you fill up and a permenant breather with a much smaller bore. I dropped the tank and sucked through the pipe and something was obviously blocked so I tried (and failed) to get the filler neck assembly out to route the small pipe back (as it disappears behind the filler neck).

After this failure I decided to refit the tank and snip the hose, problem solved with the fuling but it left an easy entry for dirt and water to enter the pipe and cause the same issue.

After some head scratching I bought a 6mm one way valve for a pit bike fuel cap from the bay and fitted it to the pipe, job done! And it was 0.99p including postage for the valve.

I hope this helps someone else out there as this forum has got me out of the doo-do so many times.
