Fitting Pas To A 1.9 Mi16

Can someone clarify what I would need from a 205 and what would from an Mi or Bx to retrofit PAS to my Mi'd 205 Gti phase 2.

 

I ask as I recently entered the car in a slalom with with local car club and ached for 2 days after fighting with the wheel all day.

Rack and associated bits from a 205 or 309 (same), or a 306/Xsara rack will also fit and some of them are higher ratio. Cooling loop from a 205 to fit under the floor.

 

Pump, pulley, bracket, belt 405 stuff, to bolt on top of the gearbox driven off the exhaust cam.

 

Pipes need to be a bit of a hybrid of both, may need to have something modified on the pressure side as it needs to be swaged fittings. Low pressure return is just push on and clipped so easy to sort at home.

Just to add. I recently (well, last year) did mine, well worth the effort just for the quicker ratio, I also find the car nicer to drive with PAS.

Did you have much trouble sourcing the Mi16 bits?

 

I see there is a full 205 set up currently for sale but i guess I might be better off sourcing those bits separately if I went that route.

Though not an Mi16, I retro fitted PAS to my 1.9 (as I also use it for Autosolos) using a Ph2 Xsara VTS rack and Saxo electric pump. As Tom , would highly recommend doing the quick rack rather than just getting a 205 set up.

 

My rack cost £80, pump £50 and hose £25. Can't remember how much the track rods were, but not pricey on an ECP discount day. I chose to relocate the battery to the boot and mount my pump on the tray, but you can put it wherever it fits, more so if you get one of the 106/Saxo pumps with the remote reservoir.

I suppose you could make that switchable as well which would be ideal for the best of both.

I dropped lucky and found someone selling a full set up of bits removed from an Mi 205 on eBay. It was missing a couple of bits that I happened to have kicking about, pulley on the exhaust cam being the main one.

True, but it's lethal without the power on a quick rack. I've yet to fit my cooling loop and the pump has cut out a couple of times in an autosolo and the steering was impossibly heavy.

 

I get that road work would not require the same input, but you never know when you might need it in an emergency. With my setup and zero toe, the constant assistance doesn't bother me at all.

 

Come and have a drive if you're local!

The problem with that is that whilst a regular PAS rack is fine with all the hydraulic bits removed (on the road/track anyway, might be a bit much on a slalom!), in the situation you're suggesting you'd still have all the hydraulic parts fitted which would dramatically increase the weight to beyond what I would deem acceptable.

I think quite possibly yes, in fact I think it's what I have, as the pump bracket has been modified to suit.

I think you're right Tom, the diesel runs a double width pulley on the cam to drive the vacuum pump & pas pump so the bracket is slightly different spaced, they use the same pump so there has top be a difference somewhere. (I replaced the pump on my old STDT with an Mi one when it failed.

 

I'll have a look at part numbers on service box to check though.

There was a diesel 205 with pas at a local scrappy a couple of weeks ago. And it's one of the old school take it off yourself yards where very little costs more than a tenner.

I had the (almost new) radiator, gear knob and a bonnet hinge for the princely sum of a fiver! So may even be worth a trip down for it.

I had a quick look & the XUD pump bracket has a different part number to the Mi (4009 44 xud & 4009 08 XU9J4).

Yes the Derv and Mi are different brackets, the 205 Rack is slightly quicker and is a direct fit with the right bits, The Xsara rack depending on phase may need some pipes making up as the later ones are a push fit type unlike the phase 1 which is the same screw fitting as the early car's.

I mounted a 205 XUD style pump on my 205 with Mi16 head.

Had to modify the mounting holes of the gearbox bracket like this:

I kinda fancy how the reservoir is built-into the pump unit itself.

I'm not running a cooling loop on it either, haven't had any problems, however in hot countries I guess it might be of more importance.

I like the 205 XUD pump. Didn't even know it existed.

 

I didn't run a cooling loop either, until I set the caster to +6 deg. It sits on 90 deg C now.

Yes. You can use any type of cooler as long as you put it in the low pressure part of the system like the OEM cooling loop.

Good to know. I wonder what braided (or solid) hoses would do the steering feel - whether they could offer an improvement like they do with brakes. Though looking at PAS hoses they seem strong as hell and unlikely to expand despite the pressure.
