Recommended Posts

Hi my cti project is now finished but I have one concern the engine is a strong 1905 alloy block mi16 from a citreon bx gti of which I have all the service history my problem is the gear box what I don't know is was the bx gti 16v gear box used and is that box the same as the mi16 box I know the engine was out of a89/90 bx my box seems very long in 1st and 2nd and is a be3 box could be from a phase 2 1.9gti are there any markings anywhere on g/box which could tell me what it is thanks peter

Unless you're lucky and the sticker is still present on the gearbox casing, you really need to check the final drive to know with a degree of certainty what the gearbox is. Problem is, with the gearbox in the car that's both a pain and messy.

If you say that 1st and 2nd are quite long then I'm guessing that it's not an Mi16 'box (same thing as a BX 16v 'box) as 1st and 2nd are very short on that, but likely something more like a 1.9 GTi. 70mph in 5th would be just short of 3500rpm if so.

If it is a 1.9 'box, then you're missing out on the joy of an Mi16 engine - the long 1.9 gearing really does make them feel quite flat compared to the shorter 1.6 or Mi 'boxes.

Yes that what I thought also I suspect being the donor was a 89/90 car if box had been from that it should have been a be1 I think again I think a be3 1.9 box

'89/90 was around the changeover point from BE1 to BE3, so the donor could have been either if it was from that period.

The long 1st and 2nd is the giveaway that it's not an Mi16 'box - 2nd is short enough on an Mi box that from memory it won't quite hit 60mph without a change into 3rd.
