Starter Problems

Recommended Posts

I had a few issues a year or so ago with the click but no turn issue, started one in every 5 tries though!

I've come to the car this morning and click but no turn again, no matter how many times I try it doesn't work. I jump started and went for a 5 min drive. Tried again right away and still no joy. Not the battery I don't think as everything else seems to be bright and quick!

To solve the issue before I did away with the brown multiplug connection and connected directly to the starter which solved the issue nicely. The starter is new ish, (2 years old). The ignition switch was replaced at the same time!

Firstly I cant remember how to check the starter independantly of the starter circuit. Is it as simple as shorting the 2 studs on the starter?

Secondly Where do I start with checking the starter circuit? I can never remember how to best do voltage drops.

yep shorting the large stud to the starter solenoid will trigger it, make sure its not in gear!

pull the spade off and check the volts on the small wire.

Good point, would be just right for me to flatten myself ! :) I'll try the direct trigger approach when I get home, see if it works! It's a bit of a nightmare to get at!

if that appears OK put the spade back on and check the volts while it has the load connected to it...

It likely needs to have old corroded wiring replaced, cut it back until you see bright shiny copper, it might be quite a lot that you need to cut out.

Try running a new wire from the ignition switch to the starter, worked on mine

As said already, it'll most likely be down to the old wiring for the solenoid.

It'll be black quite a long way through it I'd expect, especially on the engine bay side so replacing it all is probably the best fix.

Hi Guys,

Well, I go outside armed with multimeter, jump cables to see if a boost from my other car helps, and the gloom of a man who needs to take the throttle body off that he spent ages practically gluing in place to make sure there were no leaks!! Turned the key and she fires up without hesitation, nice quick turnover too as I've become used to. Take her for a drive 10 mins, try again and fine. Let her cool and try, still fine ??? I'm guessing there must be a bad connection somewhere that's intermittent. Does the connection go through the fuse box? I can't remember!

cheers

Martin

It goes through the interior fuseboard but isn't fused.

Arm yourself with a hammer and foot long bar until you've sorted it

My fat starter used to stick-a smack on the top of the solenoid used to show it who's boss (mind you it's pretty hard to look "cool" when it happens at a petrol station!! Oh how impressed the wife used to be)

Took fat body starter apart after I'd changed it for a later one and I couldn't believe the crap that was in it, copper was burnt-amazing it ever worked
