1.6 Gti Head Gasket And Parts Query? Confused.

I am just about to restore a 1990 1.6 Gti black injectors [ car is very rare in this country ] and am having problems nailing down the correct parts for a head job/cambelt change etc.

Done heaps of reading on here however getting more confused with the parts required the more i read. I dont want to get them from 12000 miles away to find they are wrong :}

 

1. HEAD GASKET SET: Wanting to go Payen however conflicting info on which set /part number i need. It appears Payen GL650 is the complete kit including head gasket? Other places state that DL650 containing HG S3820K 1.3 mm .

I then have Payen DN590 ....no HG. The prices for the first two are all over the shop which adds confusement.

 

Also is it the same HG and gaskets as the 1.9 GTI.....some sites say it is?

Is the OE part # 0197H6 for the gasket set not including HG?

 

 

CAMBELT: 113 OR 114 TEETH?

 

Same belt as my 1.9?

 

WATER PUMP: LPR or SWAG brands any good?

 

Any help/ part numbers would be a great help....better to rely on owners than the interweb !!

As to water pumps, lpr and swag are not the quality i would choose.

Valeo and Airtex are two excellent brands, of course there are others as well.

Almost all parts related to a HG and cambelt change are the same between a 1.6 and 1.9 GTi of a given age.

 

On a 1990 car it should be a 113 tooth cambelt and the earlier style waterpump (ie the one without the cast section that forms part of the cambelt cover). However, it would be worth double checking as it's possible that it's had a late engine fitted at some point in its life - easiest way is to look at the tensioner, as it's a spring-loaded item on the 113 tooth belt and a conventional eccentric tensioner on the 114 tooth setup.

 

As for water pump brands, as per Jay's comment above I can't say either of those fill me with confidence! I'd be looking at Motaquip or a NOS Peugeot OE one if it were me, otherwise at least get a known reputable aftermarket brand - First Line have always been fine whenever I've used them for example.

Puegoet ones range from 70 to 90 pounds depending on what system

 

The Eurorepar range should be ok (dealer order) for pumps

Now trying to get the correct ignition leads for this 1.6 gti which is a little confusing too. I have a weird black box shaped thing with a round bit on the end [Ducellier ] in the middle of the inlet manifold..... i guess that is the coil?

If so.........anyone got a part # for the leads that i need or any other info so i can nail the correct leads for this badboy GTi ?

thats the coil indeed, check the type of connection on the distributor cap, you have a male and female type, iirc later cars 1.6 and 1.9 used the same male cap

I checked my dizzy and it is a male.....so here i am with a 1990 Euro 205 gti 1.6 with Xu5ja lump, male dizzy, coil on top of inlet.

I was looking at Ebay item 122182275981 and it seems to fit the bill if you read the big print however if one inserts the cars details in the little boxes supplied [using engine box=1.6 litre or 1.9 GTI ] it says not suitable !! Go figure.

Also there seems to be a change in ignition leads on xu5ja's after 1987 models ? All very confusing.

I know Tom....thats exactly why its a pain in the R's trying to get the correct parts for this car. There is so much misinformation doing the rounds... however the 205 1.6 takes the cake for getting the correct parts.

I have had over 27 x 205's in my time but never had this much trouble achieving the correct part.

 

I am presently in the process of seeing what distributor rotor button i need........ i am ready to top myself on that one LOL

Well, got registered....all good. However it asks me to log in and there is a user I.D and password box. The password is no problem however in the initial form i filled out there was NO avenue or mention of a User I.D.

What am i missing here ?

Yep, got the AP number sent to me.... i then inserted it into the user name box and then my password into the other box...no workies!! so i cut and pasted both in case it was case sensitive and again no workies :{

Maybe the site is down....does it go down often ?

Meanwhile any part number for ignition leads for a xu5JA 205 GTi 1.6.........i can find lots for these cars up to 1989 [xu5jm etc ] but goes missing on post 1989. [mine is 1990 ]

If it has the later male cap, use the leads for an XU9JA (1.9 GTi non-CAT 128hp) engine as this only ever had that cap/leads.

You are a gem Mei.........you have confirmed what i have been thinking all along.

 

What has been throwing me off all this time is what i read on the Magnecor site 7mm electrosports #4705 for the 1.6 Gti 86 to 1993.

 

It reads.......Some 1.6 models may need the leads sets as fitted 1.9 GTI SAE distributor and SAE coil. Models with DIN coils have 22.5" coil lead and coil is mounted on inner wing, wheras coils with SAE fitting are mounted on the inlet manifold and coil length is 33.5" [850.9mm ] ...my car.

 

Its the 33.5" that has thrown me right off the trail as all my research [and i have found a few] for the 1.6 GTi shows not one of them have that length mentioned....thus i have dismissed them.
