At a guess - VTS 1st to 4th is shorter so prob quicker round the lanes - 5th is not much difference so cruising on the motorway not much change..

Gearbox:- 1.9 gearset
Tyre:- Yokohama A048 195/50 x 15
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 21.071 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 147.499 MPH at 7000 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1424 RPM 40 MPH = 1898 RPM 50 MPH = 2373 RPM 60 MPH = 2847 RPM
70 MPH = 3322 RPM 80 MPH = 3797 RPM 90 MPH = 4271 RPM 100 MPH = 4746 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 43.649 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 4430 RPM dropping 2570 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 68.966 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 5146 RPM dropping 1854 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 93.814 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 5502 RPM dropping 1498 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 119.351 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 5664 RPM dropping 1336 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 147.499 MPH

Define quicker? It would certainly feel quicker and more frantic, but I'm not entirely sure that there would be much in it against the clock - especially say 0-60mph where you'd need an extra gear change on the VTS 'box.

Thanks Biggles, am I right in saying it looks as though it would be pretty well suited?

Yeah feeling quicker is what I would be after. (prob the same discussion as a 1.9 box on a GTI6 v's a VTS box on a GTI6).

Does a GTI6 flywheel (lightened) fit on a 1.9 engine?

Yes, it'll fit any XU engine. You'll need a matching clutch (1.9 Mi16) though as the original 8v one won't fit being 200mm (vs 215mm for the '6 flywheel)

Thanks, i'm just weighing up options should I decide to do a reverse conversion. So if I wanted to I could run my GTI6 lightened flywheel and 215mm clutch, VTS box etc. Only thing it would be BE3 reverse gear rather than the original BE1 that was on it.

I have a vts box on my 1.9 8v, with gti6 flywheel, mi16 clutch, obly thing I will say is if you have moved your radiator using the lowering bracket from fenton, or similar, it will foul the rad due to bracing on the casing.

Cool, does it feel any better/livelier than the 1.9 box?

(My rad is in standard position)

I dont think Dan has ever had a 1.9 box on that engine, its had 4.93's with gti gearset as well as the xsara vts box.

A VTS is basically identical to an Mi16 box. It will be fine.

I run an Mi16 box on one of my 1.6 GTI's and I think it's a very well suited box & possibly the best standard gear set for a 205 with any engine, 8v or 16v.
