Tailgate Spoiler Removal

I have painted the trimset of my GTI, now the tailgate spoiler is looking really old/grey. How do i remove the tailgate spoiler?

What phase us your car? If it's not a phase 1, you just need to unbolt it from the outside with a torx bit. I believe phase 1 spoilers are bonded though

It's a phase one, what do you mean with 'bonded'? Is that not removable?

Phase 1 (to 1988 with the older style dash, sliding heater controls instead of knobs) spoiler is stuck to the rear window an there is less depth to the tailgate. Later cars (or at least later tailgate as they are often replaced) have spoilers screwed to the tailgate edge

Sorry, by bonded I merely meant stuck on! I've not removed one myself (only the later models) so wouldnt know how difficult they are to remove

I guess i have to cover the suroundings than for spraying if the spoiler is not well removable.
