Gti-6 Not Starting

Hey Guys

 

Drove the car last night and was fine but refused to start this morning. Its cranking but wont start. Battery is ok and I can hear the fuel pump when key is turned to position 2. Did a quick google and GTI-6 forum suggests crank sensor which is on the GTI-6 gearbox but my conversion is using a 1.9 gearbox.

if you are on stock gti6 management it will be in the same place

I decided to investigate a bit further and found I was getting a spark and fuel. Checked the cambelt just in case and that was ok too. So with limited knowledge / skills I had it towed to a garage. They have investigated and suggesting that although there is fuel its not at a high enough pressure after initial cranking so still want to replace the fuel pump?

the fuel pumps are very old now, they dont last forever.

Hard to say without seeing the car and obviously the garage have so should be in a better position to comment/diagnose.

 

My gut feeling though is that the diagnosis doesn't quite sound right - I'm yet to see a fuel pump so bad that it still works but can't maintain enough flow/pressure to even start/idle. Sometimes the short hose that connects the actual pump to the fuel pump housing can perish and split, which if bad enough could behave as the garage are saying - I'd be surprised if it had been working 100% the previous day though.
