Blown Main Beams

Strange issue with my lights on my XS.

Driving back in the dark, they seemed slightly dim (Osram Nightbreakers) but would flicker brighter every so often. Only just detectable really. It wasn't related to engine revs.

During a spirited bit of driving, both mains went bright then blew, leaving me with sides and driving lights. I went on to dip and they worked fine, but the driving lights stayed on. I had spare bulbs so changed them and everything is working fine, but the flickering is still noticeable.

Ordered a new alternator as it's one less thing to worry about going. Any ideas what would cause this?

Yep, it's the earth block behind the headlights

My earth block is now a nut and bolt and round crimps on the wires

A lot of the blocks are shot to bits now-give it a shoogle and chances are it'll fall to bits-better to get rid of them now before winter!!

Both mains blowing simultaneously due to high performance bulbs being effectively flicked on and off constantly?

How many watts are the bulbs you are using?

If they are higher than standard and you haven't used a relay check the multiplugs on the fusebox for melting.

It's normal for the driving lights relay to stick on when the headlight bulbs are removed or disconnected.
