Spanners - What Are They Called?

Recommended Posts

Can someone tell me what you call the type of spanners that are designed around the actual shape of a nut?

I'm wanting a set of spanners (ring keys) that are shaped to the flats, (like a brake nipple spanner; without the slot), rather than the usual type that seem to grip each side of the corners of the hex.

thanks!

Can't seem to find them on the www, it keeps bringing up plumbers spanners for their compression fittings.

Tried 'Surface Drive Sockets'?

Cheers, just had a look. I've got impact sockets. It's spanners i'm after like the "six point" ones above...... (not sure why it wouldn't be manufacturers' choice for the form of a spanner, but they seem a bit thin on the ground.)

probably not common as they're a faff to use due to the limited angles you can fit the spanner, if you really need a 6 point use a socket.

that said, a decent 12 point ring spanner should be fine, if he fastener is dodgy just get new ones, it'll be cheaper than buying new spanners!

Try flank drive, if it's what I'm thinking of.

12 point has the advantage of less degrees rotation to the next fit, so easier to use in restricted areas, etc.

Edit - yeah, what Mei said - I must type faster!
