Sprucing Up The Gti And Learning To Paint.

Looking very good, it's so rewarding when it starts to come together. I bet it seems odd seeing it with the standard GTI front valence.

May take some getting used to. The real strange bit will be 1.6 alloys, I've owned it for around 14 years and have never seen it with those!

Do you still need a block?

Yes I do, if you can find time to get up there and give me a price I'll be there to remove it. I'm fed up with looking at my lovely shiny had just sat on my bench.

Do I need to bring a bucket and spade to dig it out? I'll have a chat with my van man and give you a call to arrange something.

Ok , we need to pull out the cti and whatever else is in the way.....I'll make sure the tyres are all round! I may well do some swapping about, bringing the cti home and shoving the diesel in the garage. Then the 1.6 with running gear can go in the gti and the 2.0 into the cti.........(don't worry I can get that stuff done, lol) will also enable me to dig out my spare door and tailgate for paint.... I'll try the gti with a water top up, if it's ok we can put the engine in that for transport, I have a load liner, but it got very very hot today, enough to spring some oil leaks!!!

Sounds good, I have to visit parents late afternoon, but I'll make a start , if I drop the roof I've effectively got a temporary skip !

Typical!!!!! Thought I'd risk building her up before doing the head gasket (did I mention I'm impatient?) Got very hot in traffic yesterday and on filling with water today the exhaust steamed more than my kettle. Sooooo...

I'm going to have to change the gasket. Going to try a straight gasket swap, but I've quite likely warped the head and the plan was always to swap the 1.9 back to the original 1.6 capacity with the engine presently sat in the cti because I know it's a good unit. However I want to clean and maybe paint son bits before it goes in and there's no time for that right now.

,Wish me luck on this !!

Thanks for good wishes, but engine is scrap and no longer in the car. Time to go back to 1.6. Watch this space.

I dropped the valve timing and had a horror time trying to re time it. Then I made schoolboy error and hit the starter with the crank lock pin in situ, breaking the casting. After that the started motor wouldn't turn . I needed to replace the cam belt, a couple of the alternator mount bolts were sheared in the block as was the bottom of the dipstick tube . Long term plan was to return to a 1.6 so seemed a good time to cut my losses. Head may need a skim. Other than that it's a goodun.....lol.

Bringing it up to date a bit, Think this was a problem?

So after a couple of days darting about and screwing things up I threw in the towel and retrieved this

Which donated it's heart.

Reduced the gti to this, can't think of much on the front end that's not been removed this month! Other than the subframe, suspension and brakes which will be swapped also with the cti soon so the cti will have the 1.9 set up for upgrading and the gti will go back to original.

Up and under! Could probably has left the inlet on too but it's handy to have some.wiggle room!

Luckily a straightforward swap, only requiring the exhaust manifold re sealing .

Of course now I need to get the cti mobilised again which is an xsi 2.0 conversion so bodywork on the gti goes back on the back burner for the moment.

Forgot how much "fun" this 205 lark is.

Oh, I jetwashed the lock block too before I started, lol

Ok.......so traditional wisdom tells us that when swapping engines, change timing belt, water pump (cam belt adjuster?) and clutch because it is so much easier with engine out, right? Guess who didn't? So I'm in the midst of putting the 16v in the cti and glance over at the gti to see a puddle forming behind the drivers front wheel. BALLS! Explains the whistle that I put down to dry bearings on the alternator that disappeared after the first couple of drives.

So I've had to break off the cti and replace water pump and belt on the gti, I hate that job! Also had to buy a puller for the crank pulley first time for that maybe it's my age....lol

At least the clutch has only done a couple of thousand miles .

Anyway for now running sweetly again and back in service.

Small update. After a few months the high build primer on the bonnet has started settling. I obviously used far too much, too fast again so really must work on the patience. Now showing sanding marks from too aggressive a grade of paper used at the start (using what was to hand at the time, did I mention my lack of patience?) I now have many many swirly sanding marks showing through, completely trashing the finish, so will need to be redone in the spring. BALLS

At least the cti 2.0 is now a runner.

Unfortunately that is solvent paints for you. They do sink back after time and show prep marks. Chemical cure ("2 pack") is much better in this respect but needs an indoor space for the spraying and an air fed mask for you.
