Need To Get Rid, But No Idea Of Worth

Recommended Posts

miked73

I have a 1989 Topaz blue 205 1.9 GTI, and unfortunately I need to get rid as I'd three cars on the drive, and about to try and put a tin tent and another car on the drive, and my wife will kill me. Practicality and disability mean we need to keep the automatic Smart Roadster, and the Mondeo..

It's pretty much stock - I've even got a spare parcel shelf to complement the non-speaker modified one in it. The spare has a nice fibreglass mounted shelf for a CD changer.

It's in good mechanical order; the last three MOTs all requiring minimal work to get them through (you can check the history online) For the last MOT it needed a new washer pump, for example which I fitted the night before. I've serviced it twice in three years, and have changed the coil, dizzy,HT leads and battery, along with a refurbished MAF sensor which means it idles nicely, and drives smoothly. I've also swapped the brake pads as needed. Also had a new (generice brand) OEM exhaust, and the gearbox seal replaced fairly soon after I got it.

I've replaced the drivers window mounting for the electric window as it had corroded away. Still need to repair the switch as it'd burnt out a bit.

Also replaced the rear speakers for similar as the paper was split and I hated the buzzing. Has an afermarket head unit with bluetooth unit.

I've swapped in a new passenger seat for the drivers one, but still have the original seats as well (the bolster had worn unsurprisingly)

Ohe yes, I swapped the drivers door pins.

It's not got much paperwork as the person who sold it to me moved and lost it. However, as far as he said to me, it'd had a new engine at around 100,000 miles. He was gutted to see it go, but seeing as he had a Lamborghini and a nice Alfa as his daily runner, and his girlfriend said she didn't like the ride. He'd driven it all over Europe - it's still got the german DOT stickers in it.

The sunroof works and doesn't leak.

Bad points - the laquer has peeled, and the passenger door looks to have suffered sun fading. It will need a respray.

I had to fit a black rather than grey rear wheelarch trim on the drivers side (sans red trim).

There's slight rust on the drivers side (the normal point near the door). Rust on the left wing in the engine bay. Slight rust under the rear seats (see the photos).

The light for coolant level has literally just come on, but the level is OK, so I assume it's the sensor - will have a look tomorrow. French electrics (I have owned a 305,309,306 and 106 as well as this so know they can be temperamental..)

As the for sale forum states that you can't put a car in there for sale without putting a price, I need to ask for your opinions first, and then will move it to the appropriate place, so apologies if this breaks any rules..

I believe one of the forum members had a drive in it, but couldn't afford it at the time. He'll back up that it drove well, hopefully.

More pics can be found here

Thanks for your advice.

Hi Mike,

Prices are going up for gtis at the moment! So that is in your favour. With it being high miles with little paper work and needing paint on the roof and welding work on the lower quarter my guess would be around 1k.

How do the inner wings, front panel and boot floor look rot wise?

Colin.

Give you a comparison I looked at a red 1.9 GTi about 3 months ago that was needing a full re spray , done 114k no history , hadn't been moted for 4 years , and wasn't drive able that sold for £2400.. Prices have gone a lot now .Yours is in a unusual colour too.

I've just put up three more pics of the front panel and boot, both of which seem pretty solid.

So, would 1500 seem a reasonable price? The guy from this forum also stated he believed the rear beam had been redone.

Topaz blue is a rare colour, yes - it's also one of those wierd ph 1.5 as it's got PAS as well, but the phase 1 interior.

Miles

It's always a hard one to price up, for a buyer's point of view I tend to work backwards on price and that determines the value, DIY and Company are vastly different, average restro's I do come in around anything from £10,000 upwards, With the damage repair on the front and the work needed I'd valve it around £800.00 as a couple of grand will be spent in no time on the little bits plus paint(Major cost) Ebay is a fair option if you can do with the mucking around you can get on there.

Mike, looks like a Phase 1.5 interior to me. Grey plastic with Quartet trim.

The intake plenum looks like it could mount the later style ignition coil but you obviously are running the previous type, so not sure if it is a pre or post '01/90' model.

With a bit of graft and a couple of thousand thrown at it, that will be a nice usable 205 for someone.

The lack of paperwork, 205,000 miles and the paintwork will put a lot of people off.

Documentation really is key, especially with the rear beam.

Just as an aside, the printed out instructions for swapping a rear beam were in the boot (along with the spare alloys that have gone to a forum member..), and given the fact they're not sagging, I'd say it'd been done prior to me buying it.

Ok - from the VIN:

Characteristics for vehicle VF320CD6223415284

VMI VF3 VDS 20CD62 VIS 23415284

Model/Country 205 GTi 1.9 130 PS (128 hp/95 kW) GB

Production Centre Mulhouse (FR)

Model Year/Assembly Entry Date AM 90 26/07/1989

Engine XU9JA D6B 1CW2P 0001600

Gearbox BVM5 BE3 2CJ19 0286946

Paint Type/Colour (EN)/Colour (FR) Metallic Topaz Blue Bleu Topaze

Trim Type/Colour Quartet Velour/Leather Black/Red square

Factory Options Installed Metallic Paint Sunroof - Manual Control Power Steering

I'll have to check the engine/gearbox numbers later to confirm the engine change.

I'd be happy to put the running condition (see the MOT history in the year's I've had it..) against most others - especially given that it's stock (even got the number plate in ALL of the windows..) With cars, you can usually tell if there're serious problems, and this short of a respray/ very minimal welding (that rust to be fully sure) is good otherwise. Of course at some point you'll probably want to rebuild the engine (who wouldn't) but you'd do that with whatever car you had, regardless.

And a high mileage car doesn't mean it's any worse than a low mileage car that's been stood.

Ebay is always an option - I've bought and sold cars on it, but I'd prefer it went to someone who actually liked these cars and wasn't going to chav it up too much..

So, I'd not take the proverbial, but I think I'll start with a price of 1500 pounds or nearest offer. Could someone put this in the for sale section of the forum, or do I have to put a new advert in there?

Mike, you are still listed as a "Passenger", so cant post for sale topics until you become a "driver". I have sent you a PM as I am interested in buying this from you. are you able to see the message?

Colin.

I'd just eBay it with the reserve set to the minimum that you'd accept.
