What's With Insuring 205S?!

Hey all, has anyone else had a problem with insuring anything other than a GTi before? I've found for a couple of years now that both the 1.6 and 1.9 GTI are pretty cheap for insurance, coming in at around £260-300 for the entire year with little-to-no NCD but I'm finding it ever more difficult to insure other models.

I found this first with the STDT model, it was hilariously more expensive than the 1.9 GTi it replaced, thinking this was perhaps just this model, I found that once I'd sold the STDT and bought a base model 1.8D, it would be cheap again. No, it's the same sort of price to insure... I perhaps thought this was to do with the cylinder capacity with HP not being a factor.

But over the last couple of months, I've found this isn't ringing true - a 1.1 '95 base model was coming out at £425 per year as the cheapest quote which I find mental, but the icing on the cake is a Gentry that I've been looking to buy is weighing in at a hefty £600+ per year to insure (even if I theoretically had 10 years NCD it's still £450+) can someone shed some light as to what's going on here? Surely my area isn't seen as bad or the GTI wouldn't be cheap as chips to insure would it?

The same results produce my 1.9 G plate GTi at £260 with no NCD applied so I don't get this at all.

It's hilarious I know. From my understanding the premiums are based on the risk factor of individual models. IE the poverty spec modems are more likely to e nicked or put into a wall by a yougun' than a GTI owned by enthusiasts these days.

There are silly comparisons like a 1L corsa costing more to insure than a rapid Volvo estate because of the average demographic!

It's bloody crazy isn't it! It's actually held me off buying a Gentry because every insurance company sees it as a base model in disguise from what I gather. I thought car insurance was the one sweet deal of growing older :( I'll stick to my GTI's I guess ha!

I would expect this sort of nonsense from "common or garden" variety insurers, the sort of which you'll find on comparison sites. You may fare better if you try a specialist insurer, particularly one that deals in classic policies.

Yeah that was the quotes I could get, I went though Greenlight and I think Flux and they wouldn't quote me online instead referring me to their direct call. Considering I was going to pay 650 for the car, then 200 to transport it before even getting into MOT and re-commissioning work, I think it's too expensive all round for someone like me to have a Gentry.

On the flip side, I've found a stripped GTI locally that I can put back together so one door and all that....

Not sure if these are normal insurance policies that you are trying but I would try a classic car policy , as long as it is a 2nd car and is garaged and on a limited mileage ( eg 5000 per annum ) the premiums are very cheap . I pay £165 for my Goodwood in London and they do not even ask about no claims bonus - it doesn't exist on this type of policy . Try Richard Hosken .

Hi,

You will find that some classic car schemes will only cover the more desirable or models they deem to be more classic, models like the GTI's I'm afraid. Statistically value makes a difference too. A £10,000 GTI will probably be far eassier to insurer that say a £400 GL model regardless as to whether the GTI is a much higher vehicle group.

If you need any help with insurance at all then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.

Dan, I've got a 1.6 GTi from 1989 I'm looking to insure if you're competitive.
