Crankcase Pressure

Recommended Posts

Malc

Concerned regards the crankcase pressure on my GTI6 engine, Fitted a catch tank due to the amount of oil coming out of the breather pipe, however still getting oil spillage from the catch tank filter. Checked for blockages etc but all okay, would this just be the case of the engine on its way out? Running a Rotrex low boost charger and still pulling well, not smoking, no other signs of engine failure. Any ideas?

No-one?

Anyway further thought, will re-route pipe work from breather and include a baffle in the catch tank, this should prevent oil spray from the catch tank filter, then look to drain excess oil back to the sump as I have a spare plug in there.

Any other ideas input welcome?

I'd certainly look at how your pipe work is routed and a drain to sump is a good idea.

My perfectly healthy boosted mi has always breathed a bit but it's easily managed with a drain to sump and then an uphill routed pipe to my catch tank.

Im not getting any oil from the pipe that usually goes to the inlet on my throttle bodied gti6 based engine.

it has the standard cam cover to block pipe.

You'd think so but not necessarily in my experience.

Allan, yeah still got the baffle in the cam cover, checked this and all clear, Thanks for advice, going to look at the drain back and pipe work for the catch tank. Seems the best option.

Pretty sure the engine is okay as not smoking, or using oil (except whats escaping from the breather) and still pulling like a train to the Rev limit.

Thanks again

have you got the valve in the breather?

No valve just straight hose to catch tank, (well more like a wiggly hose) Never even thought about that! Would the valve make a big difference?

quite possible, like i mentioned, i get no oil coming out of mine, nor does it push the dipstick out.

granted, no boost, but was the same on the old engine.

Back on this, rerouted pipe work and refitted the round black valve on the outlet breather, still spewing oil out, after a run tonight I noticed also that oil is pushing out past the dip stick and the oil filler cap. Not keen on draining back into the sump from the catch tank as the oil coming from the breather looks contaminated, a sort of coffee colour, not water as the coolant is still full, could this be fuel mixing with oil?

Any suggestions as to why the pressure is so high. As said no smoke from exhaust and engine pulls well, ticks over and runs smoothly.

Hmmm, it sounds excessive malc. Can you do a compression test?

Allan, Not something I have done before, however think I need to get this done, will look into it. any pointers on how to do this welcome.

If the engine is on its way out, then only one solution really........................................time to go high boost!!

Every cloud has a silver lining..... :P

Just pic yourself a cheapo comp tester up off the internet/halfords and compare the cylinders. Just a case of whipping a plug out, screwing it in and turning it over.

If you've got worn bores or worn/ broken rings this will obviously show a lower reading. It will also highlight any leakage around the headgasket between bores, into waterways, oil ways etc.
