Fitting Exhaust Manifold, Would You Use Any Sealant?

Had a leaky fire ring seal so re fitting manifold with new gaskets on engine side and flexible fire ring joint, didn't use any sealants last time. Should I??

No, shouldn't need to.

 

Were they OE or at least a reputable brand? Some of the pattern stuff is garbage unfortunately

agree with anthony, the downpipe joint kit from the dealers arent expensive and much better quality than aftermarket, gaskets i have not had issue with aftermarket as long as all 4 match, there are a few different types of construction about and the total thickness varies.

Got a good new set of gaskets, elring I think. And a Peugeot fitting kit. Bizarrely there are 3 pairs of the long bolts, slightly different lengths, which should I use.

I can see that there was only about 5mm overlap on the lower side of the fire ring and not very compressed compared to the top so I think that's where the leak was. It was seated properly on the manifold but not very even on the exhaust, hopefully nothing's out of position. Also it's almost impossible to see the mating face on the head, I'll have to use a mirror but I'm just hoping the face is clean as the manifold mating face was quite a mess with glued on gasket!

I haven't done an 8V for a while but on 16V engines, and with wedges, I use no gaskets and just Loctite Copper Maxx. I've never had a fail. I wouldn't hesitate to add some to help it seal.
