Differences Between 1.6 And 1.9 Engine Componants And Building Engine

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I know the engine build I'm leading to asking about has been discussed on here before and I have looked at those threads (I hope all of them) and cant find the answers to a few questions I'm hoping that the knowledgeable members on here would be able to help me out with them before my mind turns to mush.

So I am building an engine and from my previous mistakes that Miles put right for me at the weekend (thanks again Miles) I now know I need a 1.9 (xu9ja?) crank of which I believe I have 2, conrods to match that crank and then 1.6 xu5ja pistons and I had planned to run a lightened 1.6 flywheel and a PT22 cam from Kent.

firstly am I going to encounter any issues I haven't realised?

and the main reason I post I have 3 pairs of pistons on rods, 2 cranks and I have no idea 100% how to identify the variants I have, so I was hoping someone could fill in the blanks here and correct any mistakes I have come to;

1.6 xu5ja

Bore 83mm

Stroke 73mm

Main 60mm

Big end ?

Piston pin ?but same?

1.9 xu9ja

Bore 83mm

Stroke 88mm

Main 60mm

Big end 50mm

Piston pin ?

Also what are the differences between pistons?

I hope this isn't a repeat of a thread I've missed in my search and hope its useful for more than just me

xu5 and xu7 are 45mm big ends, 50mm on xu9/xud9 xu10 dw10 and xud11.

not sure on pin sizing, but xu5 and 9 are the same, a shrink fit non bushed rod.

150mm rod on xu5 and 143 on xu9

pistons are nigh on identical bar a smaller dish in the crown to compensate for a smaller capacity, when used in a larger capacity engine up goes the compression.

Spot on thank you

The 143/150 sizing on the rods is that the overall height or what is that measuring?

Big end to little end bore centres but the overall size will also be clearly different between the 1.6 & 1.9.

The 1.6 rod won't fit the 1.9 crank.
