Squeak When Putting Input Into Steering

Recommended Posts

large

Car is a std 1.6 Gti. It has developed a high pitched squeak when driving at speed ( over 40).

It sounds more pronounced when when turning left but is evident when turning right as well.

My first thought was the intermediate bearing on the drive shaft as it did sound to come from the center of the car. After removing the drive shaft I can't see a lot wrong with it other than a split CV boot but the CV joint was still packed with grease.

Other then wheel bearings any other suggestions, thanks.

Sorry I should of said that the noise is linked with wheel rotation speed.

Dragging brake caliper would be my guess - light left foot braking will silence/change noise if it is

Something similar happened to me, there was a rubber seal next to the intermediate bearing and that seal made the squeak, simply cut it off.

Thanks for the replies, I really hope it's not the brakes being I have the drive shaft out now.

The seal was not on the shaft.

Little update, replaced the CV boots on the drive shaft as one was split and the other looked like it was about to.

Pulled the inner CV apart to clean the old grease out and found one of the bearings didn't have any rollers in it.

I'm pretty confident that it is not the source of my squeak but still good to find.

+1 dragging brakes have the same problem myself and occasionally the offside one binds slightly

Just to end this. It wasn't the brakes, well I don;t think it was anyway.

When driving I noticed that if it started to squeak when going in a straight line if you accelerated hard it would stop,

going back to my initial theory of the intermediate bearing.

My solution was in the end to turn the radio up as I went to pugfest and back.

The next time I used the car the squeaking had stopped and has not come back.

Sorry if you are reading this looking for answers.
