Bottom End Failure- Help Required!

Recommended Posts

Telf

Hey all,

Just serviced the Pug. I seem to have developed a weird clackity noise that emanates from the sump area.

I'm concerned I have a bottom end issue but having never heard or experienced a fault of this nature I'm not so sure.

So is there anybody around the Anglia area who might be able to take a look? Or anybody who can offer any advice?

Cheers

Paul

What oil did you use? When does the noise occur? All the time, just on start up etc. Check your exhaust manifold isn't cracked as this can sound similar.

Big end bearings is the first thing that pops up in my mind...

Is the knocking noise worse under load?

I used 10W/40.

The noise is just there - not worse if I ping the throttle. I can hear it when I've got my head near the sump- only noticed it because the metal coolant pipe is leaking so I was seeing it had got worse (and the engine was running).

The top is tappity and needs sorting but this noise is new.

its at advanced miles 252K and as far as I know has had no bottom end work.

Noisy chain on oil pump? Timing belt idler or tensioner (cos that's the end you're at)

Of course, if your heads under the wing it's gonna sound worse-I have a wooden bridge to drive over to get to main road, engine sounds bloody awful if you're sitting on the bridge waiting for gap in traffic
