Gti Suspension, Rear Is Too Soft

Recommended Posts

MKrisz92

Hey guys!

I've put a fully rebuilt 1.9 suspension into my 1.4 RG. Rear beam and the whole front got rebuilt, with koni str-t shocks (yellow ones) and eibach pro kit springs. I loved it a lot(the handling is great), however compared to the front the rear sits too high (standard). Here comes the catch... I wanted to lower it, but first I put 4 people into the car. The rear got really, but really low(around 6cm lower). The tyres almost hit the arches and the bumper. We rode around a bit, no problems though.

What could I do to make the rear stiffer, lower it without having problems with the tyres(185/60r14) hitting the arches? Also it looks a bit crappy, with such a high rear. It's for fast road use, I dont use it on tracks, just around the city :)

Sorry for my english, I know its not the best :)

Thanks!

-Chris

I think if you just lowered it around 30mm, you'll be fine. And that looks like it would be about level with the front.

Yeah I guess so, but wouldnt it hit the arches with 4 people? It's really close right now

It shouldn't hit the arches no matter how low you have it as long as you have correct wheels and correct tyres. It will just be closer to the bump stop so you'll have less travel.

Lowered with 4 people in the car you'll likely be on the stops any way!

Well I use 14x6j wheels, et16, 185/60 tyres. They used to rub just a little bit on the arches(before the rebuild). Could I get away with this if I put spacers beneath the bump stops?

You can try bump stops from berlingo/partner, these are longer and softer( bonus I think), 5166.73 94 mm , 5166.63 81mm.

Still experimenting , so far I have used longer ones for tarmac , shorter version for gravel.

Are you sure the rear beam is from a GTI , its not unknown for beams to be swapped in the past and you end up with one that has thinner torsion bars . Measure the diameter of your T/B's with a vernier . That would make a big difference to how much the rear suspension sat down under load .

This auxilary springs looks good! My rear torsion bars are gti ones though. On a base model shell (roland garros cabrio) lowered around 2cm, with koni yellow dampers. The tyres hit the bumpers under load (4 people in the car). How can I fit these springs btw? Could you post a picture of your setup please, wicked?

The main problem is that here in hungary I cant buy torsion bars.. and nobody makes them. If i could, i would buy some thicker ones to match the eibach front springs

I dont have a picture of them. It's a set for standard 205/309/306, which is too long for a gti. So you need to modify them, otherwise it will lift the rear a lot, making it a 4x4 lookalike...
