Expansion Tank Sensor Phase 2

Hello,

Does someone have a picture of the plug going into the phase two coolant level sensor - I need to see which way the wires go around around.

My plug was knackered years ago so I cut it off and replaced with 3 separate terminals and I don't think it went back right.

Is there a way of testing the sensor - resistance??

Also does the low coolant light come on like the stop light with the ignition?

I really can't remember it's been so long.

Basically my coolant runs low and the light never comes on!

No, only comes on when the coolant level is low. Doesn't come on as a test with ignition.

How do these actually work? I.e. if I had a box full and some were duff and some are ok, how can I bench test them to tell which work and which don't?

that's what I'm trying to work out -

The bulb may have failed but I've spent ages getting my dash not to rattle and simply do not want to take it apart just to test the bulb!

Last time I took the sensor right out and the light didn't come on.

The car uses coolant as it blows out of the tank, crappy cap.

The sensor should have two metal pins poking out of the top of plastic sheeths, or more likely two corroded lumps. AFAIK when the coolant level is correct a current can run between them, when they are high-and-dry it can't - what should happen, I think, is that the electrical current should run between the earth and one of the wires when the sensor is submerged, and the other wire when they aren't. Testing it should therefore simply be a case of checking this on a multimeter.

Sorry for the "think" and "should" - I do have a P2 sensor, but its in very bad shape and there's no way I can check my idea.

I seem to recall that if you join the two outer contacts of that red plug with a piece of wire, the dash light comes on.

I have no idea how the level sender works either, it certainly doesn't seem obvious. Every ph2 car that I have owned (probably 10now) has needed a new sender unit.

I am sure I did see a guy on ebay who did a repair service on them, as versions of that sender are used on other PSA cars. I'll have a search.

I've never tried one but i wouldn't be surprised if a later type to suit the jpt type plugs will fit, theyre very common and do work.
