Difficulty Engaging Reverse And 1St, Help Please

Recommended Posts

pugfrank

Over the last six months every time I have had the car out for a run it has needed a couple of turns on the clutch cable adjustment, as it became difficult to get into 1st and reverse. I quickly realised that this was not the answer as I was fast running out of thread on the cable adjuster. The clutch has always been very on and off and a very jerky action, Not allowing any slip.

So I have replaced the clutch cable, I still have a problem getting into reverse and 1st, but this is only a problem when the car has warmed up. When the car is stone cold it goes into reverse just about ok and 1st ok. The new cable has made the gear change feel much better with a lot more control over engaging the clutch now.

I put a new clutch assembly in the car 2years ago so would hope it has not failed already.

Any help and ideas where to go next with my problem would be great.

Pedals should be about same height, if not something worn.

As Welshpug says check gearbox bolts-especially the cap head-mine fell out!! Thought I'd driven over something (70mphish) Gearbox to engine had opened up by about 1.5 mm-struggled to get gears and bit of vibration/noise that went away when I pressed pedal

Ps I changed my clutch cable about two years ago with eBay OE special?!?! And it went in s*ite about a month ago

Thanks for the advice guys. It's a be1 gearbox for reference. I have checked gearbox to engine bolts everything tight, pedals all the same height to, some one else has said to me about weak springs in clutch causing drag.

Is there a fix for bending weak/ bending clutch arm? A mod or alternative part?

I'm heading for gearbox off and new clutch at this rate, but un fortunately it's going to have to wait as I'm moving house imanitly.

be1 quadrant is only spot welded together, do if the pivot is worn and stiff they can bend, make sure its straight and seam weld it, fresh bushes and ensure it has the 3mm thick washer under it or it'll bind
