MCM things are done very much tounge in cheek, some people just done get it but I think its brilliant.

 

Roadkill is great too, its a bit like mcm but with many more years cash and contacts behind them, also American car culture in general is quite different.

What fresh program? It's 95% the same. The 'new' show is akin to turning your underpants inside out to get another day's wear from them and calling them "fresh"!

It was the old format more or less but without the humour. Theres a clip floating on facebook showing the old presenters and no matter what it looked like the presenters generally had fun. Theres probably the differences between journalists that can write their own material and presenters who have it all planned out for them so they can just read off an auto-queue.

I never realised Angela Rippon had been one of the original presenters. She was before my time as I didn't start watching until probably mi-eighties. Apparently Noel Edmonds took over from her as the main presenter for two years from 1980.

 

Just reading up on Wiki now, there quite a few women presenters.

Goes to show that judging by all the comments on here about the new Top Gear, it was the presenters that made it all happen really. I can see Amazon doing well out of this (bigger budget and nowhere near as PC as the Beeb). The Grand Tour isn't going to be focusing on cars, more the camaraderie between Clarkson/Hammond and May.

The BBC had the opportunity for a fresh start here, they could have picked a new production team and new writers along with the new presenters, tossed some new and fresh ideas around. Sure it would have been a gamble and could have gone either way. Sticking with the same stale 14 year old format is a massive let down.

 

On the other hand, perhaps they were just never going to live up to the reputation of the last few years, and we are being unduly unfair. After all, TG still had very high viewing figures before Clarkson's sacking, it was still very popular due to the controversies and silliness, and whilst it may not have been at it's peak it still went out on a relative high, so that's a tough act to follow. When they introduced new TG 14 years ago they had little to lose as old TG had declined in popularity and been cancelled, so the only way was up really.

 

Unless they do something really radical I don't see them lasting more than another few years. There's too much strong competition now with plenty of Youtube car channels. Unless Chris Evans turns it in to TFIGear. They could turn the Stig in to the new Wiiiiiiillllllllll. God I hated TFIFriday. Now I mention it, he did start the show by including his "mates from the local Indian" for an utterly pointless appearance, just like he used to on TFI.

I always thought the best bits of Top Gear was where they had to do something interesting - that also had a bit about the cars.

 

These might not be best examples but things like £1,500 Porsche challenge, budget supercars, or Clarkson bought that cheap massive Mercedes.

 

Combine that with a bit of actually testing cars and the fact that yes, they were all knowledgeable motoring journalists who could drive with a good rapport and it worked.

 

That said it had become Top Gear by numbers by the end, with the odd flash of brilliance.

 

The new one was OK. But no more. They either need to go back to the challenge format, where they find, buy and do something with a car, or totally change it up.

 

I thought the Viper thing was a bit dull and the Robin Rialto thing pointless (beyond Le Blanc showing he can still do comic deadpan pretty well).

 

Thought Chris Harris and Rory Reid's thing was pretty good. Bit more car stuff in there and that could be a good show.

Had the chance to change everything. Didn't and failed miserably. I'm giving it another go tonight and then I'm done.

 

The TG format we all got used to just doesn't work for another presenting team. Little chemistry between Evans and Joey, the odd spot of dry(ish) wit from the latter but shouty "forget Clarkson" obnoxiousness from Evans.

 

There was less proper car stuff than in old new TG and what there was had been done better before. Much better.

Just watched last nights episode on iplayer, seemed a lot better than last weeks.... Still not the show that it could be though.

It was better. But I'm not convinced it was any worse than some of the original weak episodes. I enjoyed seeing button give the 675 absolute death.

I watched the 2ND episode and enjoyed it to be honest. A lot of people online getting on the hate train because it isn't Clarkson and Co. Personally there was only Clarkson that was any good out of the last lot, James may made watching paint dry sound fun and Richard Hammond has seen too much Alan partridge and thought "yep that's the style of presenting I can do".

 

I didn't watch the last season of old Top Gear. It was such a scripted choreographed piece of turd you knew what was going to happen before the opening credits ended. Give it chance I say, once they start to bond it will get better and with a bit of luck Chris Harris will get some rallying into the program that doesn't involve d*ck head Ken Block.

I wouldn't watch this Sunday then as I believe that's who they were plugging, at the end of the last show, as being one of their guests :hehe:

 

Overall I preferred the one from Sunday just gone - better than the 1st show and a nice bit with Jenson, a bit of humour with the trip to South Africa and with EJ wrecking the Merc after not raising the suspension height lol

 

I think it will improve as it goes on and the 25 minute Extra Gear seems to work quite well as a support to the main show. I think the main show needs time to get away from the previous iteration of the show but the problem there is that BBC want to keep the same sort of format as before but with a few tweaks.

I tried the second episode on iplayer last night and got halfway through. I just can't watch it, I can't stand Chris Evans as a top gear presenter.

It's like he's trying to be Clarkson with the reviews but with emphasis on every detail rather than the stuff worth emphasising.

I think Matt could hold his own on the show better without him.

I was hoping Harris was going to be limited to the 'extra' programme they have on after. He's best suited to presenting something like Antiques Roadshow. His style is boring.

 

The 25 minute 'two stars in a reasonable priced car' is OTT and needs to be shortened. I've turned over each episode at that point, whereas I never used to - probably partially to do with the fact the guests used to be a bit more well known - IMO.

I've not watched seen Chris Harris' TG stuff yet, but as a CH fan I'm quite surprised anyone would describe him as "boring". Everything I've ever seen of him he comes across as passionate and a little playful/cheeky without being a fully fledged arse-hat. He's certainly not anywhere near the boredom levels of people like Quentin Wilson or Jon Bentley.

Quite liked last nights episode, found it entertaining in the same way TG was 5 years ago, before it became a purely entertainment based show. I think Chris Evans is sloy starting to settle in to the role a bit, still a few awkward moments mind.
