Am i right in thinking this goes on dry and not with any sealant as i think thats where ive gone wrong.

You can fit it dry or with a suitable sealer as well.

 

As a suitable sealer, i'd suggest a smear of wellseal or threebond 1215 not something thick and gloopy like silicone rtv etc.

That may be problem i think i put a bead of rtv round it when i built it would you smear both sides?.

I would save never seal the gasket unless its a cheap one, the gasket eats into the metal and makes the seal, they do need tightening up 3 or 4 times as it compress's and check when the engine's been run, never had a leak this way

Think im going to redo strengthening plate again to be safe what sealant do people recommend.

Took sump off and i think i may have found my problem as i had sump powdercoated i never cleaned the mateing face back to bare metal.

That would be a good place to start. clean it back to bare metal then hopefully you'll be fine

It's the old school way of thinking, thankfully head gaskets escape this these days and who would take a car back or even work on there own to spanner check it

If it has a spacer plate and an alloy sump, it shouldn't have any gasket(s). Strictly metal to metal contact. I prefer ThreeBond 1211. It's specifically designed for motorcycle crankcases (high viabration). It never leaks and is easy to remove next time.

 

Only use a gasket between a pressed steel sump and the spacer plate. Spacer plate to block should be ThreeBond (or similar) only. I like to fix the spacer plate down first with some extra dummy M7 bolts. When the sealant has cured, remove the bolts and fit the sump. Pedantic I know, but it won't leak.

I think the Haynes says smear a small amount of grease on the gasket to lubricate so it's not completely dry.

 

That's what I did with mine and it seems to have not leaked so far.

Tried another gasket and it still leaks so removed again it looks dry behind flywheel so hopefully not crank seal or hockysticks so i removed strengthen plate and the sealant seal looks crap to be honest what techniques do people recommend to but sealant on.

I have used loctite-si-5980-flange-sealant without problems - good for hot oil situations

Well have resealed plate and refitted sump so will let sealant go off and then will refill with oil so fingers crossed.
