jassi 1 1 Cars Posted May 26, 2016 Guys I'm using my car for road use only - No track (have a FI mx5 for that) but removed a load of weight (subs, reinforced parcel shelf, spare wheel, rubber mats etc) from the car to the region of 30kg which has benefitted the car hugely. I'd like to take the weight reduction a step further but dont want to strip the interior or replace body panels so was thinking of getting lightweight alloys, calipers and other compenents but - Would this make a huge difference? What can I get and from where? Thx

commievid 8 Posted May 30, 2016 In terms of lightweight alloys, C5 "steelies" are pretty neat, straight swap, and probably the best balance between cost and weight. I'm probably not going to bother putting back the originals on (which I usually do over winter).
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted May 30, 2016 the main thing with C5 wheels are they are too narrow, you want a 7j rim at least
Simmo 2 1 Cars Posted June 7, 2016 Miles aren't the std 1.9 alloys 6J...? I thought the C5 wheels were a good replacement with the only difference being lighter...?
petert 587 Posted June 14, 2016 Yes, they're 6J, ok if you only want standard width tyres. But if you want 205 width tyres, applicable for motorsport applications, they're too narrow. You really need 7". A friend of mine had his widened to 7". Nice wheels.
Simmo 2 1 Cars Posted June 16, 2016 Thanks, i think I'll stick with the standard width wheels for the time being!
johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted June 16, 2016 I'd agree with the above, C5 wheels, then maybe consider removing the centre exhaust silencer (if you don't mind exhaust noise), maybe a lightweight battery? Carpet underlay? Remove rear wiper and washer bottle?
kyepan 291 Posted June 17, 2016 The c5 alloys will make the steering feel lighter, reduce axel tramp, and the car will ride better, they are also 16kgs less than the standard wheels. But no other replacement parts don't have an appreciable cost weight benifit. Running around with a quarter tank of fuel will make the same difference that fitting thousands worth of light weight parts would. Sounds like you've already got a nice track toy that's tuned up, leave the pug it will be more fun as it is..
