Gti6 Timing Belt Question.

Recommended Posts

boldy205

I'm currently replacing the timing belt on my Gti6 (earlier engine with manual tensioner). I have the bottom pully and cam pullys locked in place. My question is, is it essential to lock the flywheel too? As if I didn't then when I remove the bottom pully there wouldnt be anything locking the crank?

Thanks

Matt

Another thought, so I have rotated the engine uding the crank bolt to pin the cam and crank pully. All 3 pins are in place, how do I undo the crank pully bolt to remove crank pully? I thought it was bad practice to undo the crank bolt when engine is pinned up?

Well the best way is to lock the fly imo then undo the crank, certainly the pinning tools aren't going to take too kindly to you undoing against them. The other method you can use if you dont have an impact gun is to removed the pins, put the car gear and use the car to hold the crank whilst you get it finger tight. Then start the original process over again.

I usually just wedge the flywheel to loosen the bolt then set the timing, so no force is going through the pins

Well I hope it all worked. All done just need to stick all the other bits on and fire it up. Thanks for the help.
