Strut Mis-Seated After Removal Of Hub Carrier?

Recommended Posts

soundguy
'Scuse the terminology, might be a bit off in places. Hope this makes sense...

I've recently had a new bearing pressed in to the OS hub. Wheel was removed, all ball joints/links, brake components were separated so the spring and the strut were dangling.

I removed the hub carrier and flange from the strut. Had to use a hammer after removing the pinch bolts to get the carrier off the end of the strut.

Separated the hub, got the remains of the old races out/off and the new bearing and was pressed in. But when I bolt everything back up, the upper pinch bolt head now fouls the drop link arm when testing the steering, and the tyre rubs against what I think is the brake flexi mount. And I'm sure that the spring itself is rubbing against the inner wheel arch.

When I compare the 'good' side I see that the wheel/tyre appears to have moved inward towards the centre of the car by about 10-15mm.

Has the strut/spring assembly become unseated or something? Can anyone advise me how to sort this out please? I didn't undo any top mount stuff, never gone that far before...

Has the damper got a 'tang' on it to locate it in the split part of the upright/hub?

Sounds like it hasn't and you have the damper in the wrong orientation to the hub. If it is you'll need to loosen the hub/damper pinch bolt and rotate the damper in the hub.

As Allan says, I also have seen the little lugs bend up to as they were out of line but they are there to aline the damper and hub nuckle and also they act as a spacer to stop the hub nuckle from been stretched.

It's also a good idea to use a sump plug remover or 8mm allen key in the back of the upright once the pinch bolt is slackened off. Just rotate it slightly so it holds, only takes a few gentle knocks and it will slide off the upright.

Knew I should've asked here first. Then I wouldn't have ground off the 'strange bit of weld' stopping the damper from sliding into the upright properly.

Yes, I ground the tang off then put the hub assembly back on in the wrong position. And yes, I gratefully accept the award for dork of the week. Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated!
