What Size Hydraulic Press For My Garage.

Recommended Posts

yorkshirekowboy

Just wanting to get myself a hydraulic press for general use for my cars etc, replacing wheel bearings, trailing arm shafts.

I've been looking at a 20 tonne, but unsure if this is not enough power for general use?

Any advice would be great.

Regards Danny

I've got a 20 ton full height Sealey press and I've yet to find anything it can't shift.

In truth, 10 ton would be enough for 95% of jobs - generally if 10 ton hasn't shifted it then you need to stop and investigate why! The only reason why I got a 20 over a 10 was because there was an offer on and a 20 ton worked out to be about £15 more expensive.

To give you an idea, from your wheel bearings are normally 2-3 ton and trailing arm shafts 6-7 ton (pressing out, less going back in)

10 ton will struggle to do a trailing arm shaft. 20 ton won't budge a Nissan Patrol rear axle bearing. There's nothing on a 205 I haven't shifted with 20 ton however.

10 ton has pissed every trailing arm shaft I've done so far.

20t freestanding for me - not used it for anything too taxing yet.

Also don't remember there being much in it price wise..

10 tonne is all you'll ever need. Yes ok if 20tonne is only slightly more pricey you may be tempted, but I'd argue you are more likely to do damage?

Thanks for all your help. 20 tonne seems the way to go for me. Having that bit extra I think we help for any stubborn bits. Thanks again.

I have the same press as Anthony but 10 ton. It's fine for everything 205.
