What is top speed for 1.6 , 76 kw engine? Ive tried yesterday , I reached almost limit around 170 km/h ? I ve read somewhere the top speed is 195, i know that is when it is new , but is should be close to that number ? :)

76kW... that's the early (pre-1987) XU5J 105hp engine, correct?

Either way, 170kmh (105mph for the British amongst us who don't think in metric figures) does sound distinctly on the slow side and that the engine is down on power or there's some other issue.

Claimed top speed for the early 105hp 1.6 GTi was around 118mph / 190kmh. I've never owned an early 105hp example, but certainly a good example of the later 115hp 1.6 GTi will achieve a little over that figure (Peugeot claimed 122mph)

Yes , you are right. pre -1987 engine. I think there is some other issue. How I can find out is this corect engine ? I can t read number from plates on engine. Is there another one somewhere else ?

Check the things which control your speed...

Tyre sizes, gearbox, revs.

Check fuel pump, filter, injectors, afm, ecu temp sensor, timing (belt and ignition), spark plugs, leads, coil, rotor cap, rotor arm, king lead.

Then check brakes for binding, wheel bearings failing, ensure car is tracked square (front and back), ensure you're using the right grade fuel.

Then less obvious harder to diagnose things like split downpipe divider, restricted fuel lines, head gasket failing, worn rings, wrong oil, carbon buildup in the inlet tract.

I think that should give you some food for thought

Oh also your speedo is going to be as accurate as playing darts with a cannon 100ft away.

I dunno about that bit Dan - 205/309 speedos are actually usually (but certainly not always!) surprisingly accurate I've found, assuming that the correct speedo drive etc is fitted.

The problem is Ant we have no idea what wheels, tyres, final drive, take off cog (white black reg green etc...) he has fitted...

Also have no idea if someone had taken the dials apart and dicked around with them in the past.

It it were me and I was really worried about the apparent lack of top speed, first thing I would do is verify it with a GPS speedo (OP doesn't say if that was done or if read from the stock dials). If this proved that the car was indeed down on speed then the next thing I would probably do - rather than chucking money and time at a whole lot of parts swapping - would be get it on a decent rolling road to check power, fuelling etc. That might give you some idea of what area to concentrate on.

This is just an anecdote (not advise) - when I got my Mi16 I noticed early on that it would struggle to pull past ~115 (mph). Shortly after that the AFM flap seized. Once the replacement AFM was fitted it would romp past 115mph. It's just one of the many, many things that could be causing the issue, and you may find something obviously awry like I did, or you could chase your tail for a long time, so having the services of someone who really knows these engines or getting it on a RR will be an advantage.

Tire size is 195/50/15 . They were fitted when I bought the car. I think the problem is in AFM. My original AFM was causing erratic iddle , and I put another AFM. But I think it is from 1.9 GTi model. Car runs fine when I putted this AFM so I leave it like that .. O.o

According to an online calculator the non original wheels and tyres will cause the Speedo to under read by 3% assuming a 1.6 should be equipped with 185 55 14 tyres.

1.6 GTi's are 185/60R14 as standard Steve - I suspect you're thinking 1.9's that run a 55 profile on 15" wheels.

185/60R14 and 195/50R15 are virtually identical circumference so the speedo accurate won't be impacted.

You're quite right of course. Had though I'd deleted that post as soon as it was written and I realised. In my defends I was straight in from a day's work ;-)

I've had my 1.6 up to 125mph quite easily (legally, of course) and that's a stock engine with only a Ram Air filter system that isn't factory spec.

It's a 1992 J plate car.
