Oil Pressure Sender Seems 'limp'?

Recommended Posts

commievid

Hi all,

Noticed a couple of days ago that the oil pressure appeared to be reading low, whereas usually from cold it would shoot up and then as it warmed up would reduce, and only increasing when giving it the beans, it now appears to be very limp, for want of a better word.

Stays really low, and only sometimes maybe moves a millimetre.

Just changed oil and filter, fired up the engine, and the low oil pressure light was on for a couple of seconds before it went off, so I believe the light and thus the actual oil pressure is ok.

Not the end of the world of course, but wondering if it is the sender that has gotten poorly. I made the mistake of fitting the oil filter before finding out the sender is directly above it, but I could see a single wire coming from it. That looks to be normal. I can't see whether it is just the sender or whether there is an adapter connected to it.

Would an adapter from say Miles with a 8v sender be the most cost effective approach if looking to replace?

I'll most likely have to put this on the back burner, but would be good to know how people have approached this.

Senders certainly can fail and read low making people worry unduly - I'd hazard a guess faulty senders are far more common than actual low oil pressure!

Wiggle wire-terminal on switch might be about to break giving strange readings

Also check no oil coming from switch-they can fracture causing oil everywhere!

Oil pressure gauges are great things but when the terminal broke on mine it was great running about not worrying about it! Then it got the better of me-changed it now I can't keep my blooming eyes off it lol

My readings are great, but, the damn thing won't stop leaking! Not sure if it's the threads on the sender or the T piece itself. Driving me up the wall.

Try some PTFE tape on the threads, and a copper washer.

ahh if you have one of those adapter thungs theyre a bit crap, the m10 threads in the side arent cut deep enough so the copper washer doesn't seal, thread sealant is the answer as mentioned.
