I Want Back Into The Club! Looking At 205S Again...

Some of you may remember me, I've not gone away but been considerably less active since I sold my 205 ~3 years ago. In hindsight I was a plum, I sold a mint, Alpine White 1.9 GTiS (Skip Brown engine and suspension set up) at the bottom of the market. It's not the first 205 I shouldn't have sold, I also had one of the last of the line Miami Blue ones on a 94 L-Plate many years ago.

As well as regretting these decisions I've found myself keeping an eye on 205s that come up; I'm not sure what I hope to achieve by sharing this with you all, either you can talk me out of it (unlikely on this forum) or I can at least see if anyone knows the history on what I might go and look at.

As this is my third 205 GTi I've refined my spec:

- 1.9

- Phase II

- Cherry Red

- Non-PAS

- I'd prefer a sunroof, but not essential

I'm prepared to pay a bit extra for a good un, but not the silly prices some are turning up at now. Say up to £5k (much more than I sold my last one for). I figure if the shell and interior are in good nick I can do most of the simple mechanical stuff and farm out the harder stuff to the various and extremely skilled members on this forum!

I've been keeping an eye out in the usual places, one's turned up on eBay that looks interesting, I'd post the link but it's against this sub-forum's rules!

So, go on! Talk me out of it...

Good to hear from you again Andy. In some ways the Eagles could have been singing about 205 ownership when they did Hotel California:

"You can check out at any time you like but you can never leave" :D

I don't think any of us need to sell you the virtues of a 205 as you know them full well, hence you're back wanting another. Only thing that I would say is that with prices going through the roof, they're certainly not the value that they once were if you're buying them to drive and enjoy.

There's lots of overpriced rubbish out there that people believe is worth top dollar, but a £5k budget should still buy you a car as good as your white one was. As you say, in hindsight you sold your old one at exactly the wrong time!
