Timing Belt Change Question

Recommended Posts

parv121

hi,

today i started my first timing belt change on my 205 1.6 cti XU5J.

When taking off the tensioner and spring a small metal block fell out from somewhere around there.

its nice and clean about 10mm wide with a curved top. first i thought it was a magnet but it isnt.

i have been throught the haynes manual but no mention.

could it just be a random bit or is it something from somewhere.

also i have lost the 14mm single nut which fit on the rear of the tensioner, i think is in a unreachable place.

can i put on any nut which fits the bolt?

i will try and upload a picture of the small metal block.

any idea please.

would be kindly appreciated.

thanks

Only thing I can think of is the woodruff key which the bottom pulley slides over

Let's see a pic

Make sure bottom pulley bolt is tight when replacing, as the tension aides oil pump working properly

will do,thanks.

to be honest the only bit that i feel odd about is putting the new tensionor on and putting the spring back. but i will see ow i get on.

i think all the covers and bolts and tight working space make the job a pain rather than hard. but i should finish it tomorrow.

thanks again.

Hi, can anybody tell me if the white marks on the timing belt really matter when putting on a new belt?.

The reason I ask is because if both the cam pully and crank pully line up with the holes And you put the belt on the rotation should remain the same shouldn't it????

So what are to white lines for on the belt??

Any advise please,

Thanks

white lines are also alignment marks, however if you pin the cam and crank you can disregard them, just take heed of the direction arrow/marking.

The tensioner isn't a problem, if its in good condition it will tension the belt due to the spring strength. If the roller is squeaky replace it, don't reuse.

As Mei says if you have pinned it top and bottom the belt marks don't matter (other than the direction arrow)

Don't be tempted to fit the belt then crank it round with the tensioner nuts un tightened - it just leads to a slack belt and all the dramas I caused myself with the belt subsequently slipping!

Thanks guys for the info.

I sucessfully done my first timing belt and alls well.

Silly plastic covers everywhere was terrible.

But it's true what I've read.

Doing your first 205 timing belt truly is a life changing experience!!!!

One of the biggest emotional roller coasters I've been on for a while!!
