jasetheace 0 1 Cars Posted March 30, 2016 HI guys, im looking some info on a 205 with Reg K989 AVC. Friend is looking to buy this but car check comes back as a gentry. Any way to tell if this 1 of the genuine 205's that where auto from factory that where destined for the jap market? It has the jap spec that it should have but could have been made to look like GTI. Any help very much appreciated..
welshpug 1,657 Posted March 31, 2016 Gentry was a GTI body with an Auto box, so yes it will look like a gti from afar, till you get close and see the colour of the interior There were many auto gti's not intended for Japan of the same spec, nothing much special about them. forbeslongden 32 13 Cars Posted March 31, 2016 Is this the car from eBay? It looks like a proper Jap market to me. A few things, it's got the 14 inch alloys, air conditioning unit with correct dash switches, drum rear beam(?) plus it Cherry Red which I seem to recall the majority (if not all?) were red. It would seem too much like hard work converting a Gentry to look like a Japanese Auto - certainly more than the seller is trying to get for it. The car looks honest and I personally think if it drives well, is a bargain.
Silky 33 1 Cars Posted March 31, 2016 Gentry were only available in Green (not sure if it was Sorrento) and Aztec Gold. There were no Red Gentry's
forbeslongden 32 13 Cars Posted March 31, 2016 ^ Yeah I should have made that more clear to be fair.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted March 31, 2016 Yes that's a Japanese model, Tell by Vin plate location and spec, 105 bhp and the most valuable part is the A/C, description is wrong as normal and worth no more than £1000.00 without a full inspection
Pugleyrich 37 1 Cars Posted March 31, 2016 Not sure what car check you're using, but it comes back as model 'unknown' on mine. Its strange as the check I do is usually very good. Either way, I don't think it's a gentry. Looking at the photos, there would have been a lot of work to make it look as it does now and it would have had a respray. The car if pretty rough looking in the photos which suggests its not had a respray of late. As said above, Gentrys only came in Aztec and Sorrento
jasetheace 0 1 Cars Posted April 1, 2016 Thanks for the info guys. I own one of the auto ones myself. Due to disability thats why i have the auto box. Miles 331 1 Cars Posted April 1, 2016 Easy to convert a GTi to Auto, the box can take a slight hike in power as I have a Full power CAT CTi in Auto form, just need the box, flywheel and gear change parts, to make that a good car would need allot spending on it

What mods would you recommend for the auto GTI. I would like to up the power slightly.
griffo 15 1 Cars Posted April 2, 2016 If you have the VIN, then enter it at http://205gti.info/vin and you'll get the answer. I does sound very much like a JA spec GTi Auto.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted April 2, 2016 Nothing really, the 105 engine runs low compression, small valves and a CAT, Can fit a turbo with ease but the box will go pop
griffo 15 1 Cars Posted April 3, 2016 Had a look at the eBay advert and the car it has the Exhaust Temperature control box installed on the RHS firewall, so definitely an Japan export model. A common upgrade to the DFZ engine in AU is to replace the head from a XU5M3/Z or I believe the DKZ which will bump up the C/R beyond the D6B spec which also makes putting in 'hotter' cams worthwhile, but as was stated you need to be wary of the auto gearbox's capabilities. Yes you could convert to manual, but unless you pay substantially less than the asking price, you'd be better off buying a full spec 1.9 GTi if that is what you after as this auto is essentially the same as the (Phase 1 & 1.5) AU 1.9 GTi, a 1.6 GTi with a DFZ... but with an auto box. forbeslongden 32 13 Cars Posted April 4, 2016 If you're not fussed about it being collectible, there's a sub £1000 Jap Auto in Grey that's being dangled about if you're interested it in?
jasetheace 0 1 Cars Posted April 6, 2016 Thanks guys for input and info. My mate ended up buying it. Now he will be looking some 1 to restore it to its former glory. If you're not fussed about it being collectible, there's a sub £1000 Jap Auto in Grey that's being dangled about if you're interested it in? I might be interested in this. As said above i already own one already but having more than one 205 is no bad thing. Can you send details-pics by email?? forbeslongden 32 13 Cars Posted April 6, 2016 I've emailed the seller, can pass the details on if/when I hear back? On a side note, Miles can restore the one your mate bought I'm sure.
