Trouble Buying Correct Plug Leads. 1.9Gti. Help Please.

Recommended Posts

peakrevs

One or more plug leads are breaking down on the 1.9GTI engine fitted to our Classic Trials car so a replacement set is needed and there's the problem. I cannot get a set that fits. I have done a search but cannot find anything. The first replacement lead set had plug connectors for plugs that are buried a long way down. I then got another set from GSF which fitted the plugs but would not fit the female terminals on the Lucas clip on distributor cap. These I believe were for the Bosch screw on lid with the mail connectors.

So my question. Can anyone please identify what we want, provide a part number and a supplier please.

Picture 1 shows the correct connector on the old set of leads

Picture 2 shows the distributor cap with the old set of leads fitted

Picture 3 shows the plug connectors on the first new set of leads.

Thank you for your help.

John

the confusion stems from you having a 1.6 dizzy fitted, or possibly just a very early 1.9.

Yep, that looks to be an early 1.6 dizzy... part number will end 063 from memory.

All 1.9 non-CAT GTi's used a screw-on Bosch male dizzy, not the clip-on Bosch female dizzy that you've got fitted... hence you can't find the right leads under 1.9!

Thank you for that. I'd totally forgotten that I got H & H do build the old distributor from the 1.6 engine. So would a 1.6 lead set fit at both ends?

Yes, providing that it's an early 1.6 - later 1.6's used the same male dizzy cap as 1.9's.

The first set of leads you got are plain wrong! Second set are for screw on type cap as you say.

You want leads for an early 1.6, these use the clip on cap.

Try Mister Auto, they can supply Bougicord (oem) leads and helpfully the pictures show the lead end style and lengths so you can check what you are ordering is correct.

from the picture it looks good.

edit, looking up the useful cross references on that listing, I found some Bougicord leads at a bloody good price, they made the o.e leads,

It has been ages since I have visited this forum and I'd forgotten what a cracking load of blokes you are and how quickly you come back with the definitive answers. Thank you so much and to you particularly Tom for the link.

We got our best ever result on this year's Exeter Trial. Here's a link showing the car on the infamous Simms hill which is rumoured to be 1:2.5 half way up.

Thank you once again.

For future reference as well, GSF do not stock the leads for a 1.9 with the coil pack on the inner wing (male to female connector). Even though it states they do, the later male to male connector for the coil pack on the manifold is what turns up.

You could also check the formula power leads!

I bought one set for the xu5jp for my xantia the 10mm ones and are best quality and low resistance also!
