86alexp 2 Posted March 22, 2016 I have searched and searched through loads of gearbox posts so I apologise for yet another......... Has anyone tried an Mi16 Box with a 1.6 FD? The reason I ask is I need to rebuild my Mi16 box as it is jumping out of 5th. I really like the Mi16 box ratios. However since my Mi16 is now in the 180-200bhp window like so many on here it could handle a taller FD Easily. Having put a temporary (Tired) 1.9 box on I don't find it too bad. Seeing as I have the parts and I need to rebuild anyway. I cant help thinking an Mi16 Box with 1.6 FD would be a nice combination. So I am hoping someone here has experienced this combo, or has a valid input. P.S. I have at my disposal, a 1.9 box, an Mi16 box a 1.6 FD and a low mileage diesel box (For Bearings and Syncro's)
welshpug 1,661 Posted March 22, 2016 (edited) in your part of the world I'd definitely do the opposite, 4.4 fd with the gti gearset! not like its sitting on the motorway for hours with a 1.9 box on I bet you rarely use 5th! if its just 5th its jumping out of I would start by just taking the end cover off, see what you find, may be a loose nut or worn synchro, so may not need a full stripdown. on a related note, don't have a spare gti gearset to hand do you? need one to build a hybrid box for a friend Edited March 22, 2016 by welshpug
86alexp 2 Posted March 22, 2016 (edited) Thanks Mei, I like the idea of just repairing 5th. I think its even the same as the diesel 5th I have. I do like the tall 5th on a daily, if this was only my weekend car I would be totally with you for a 1.9 box with Mi16 FD. As for the spare gearset... In a month or two once I have made my mind up and built the box I want, I should have a 1.9 gear set left over Edited March 22, 2016 by 86alexp
Anthony 1,003 Posted March 22, 2016 1.9 Mi16 with a 1.6 FD is basically a 405 SRi/GRi gearbox - the 4th and 5th gearing ends up being quite long. I used to have that gearbox in an 405 and whilst it worked well enough with the nature of the car/engine and long motorway slogs, I wouldn't think it very well suited to delivery of a typical 200hp Mi16 assuming that's N/A. Might work OK on a boosted one though where it wouldn't need to be revved so much to extract the power.
86alexp 2 Posted March 22, 2016 Thanks Anthony, after your post I've just been looking at the GR ratio's although they do look slightly taller again. You have pretty much answered my dilemma, its good to have a real experience. Seeing as I like the Mi16 box already, perhaps there is no better ratio for me for what I want. Plus the low 1st is nice for towing
