Breather Pipe Gunk And Air Intake Oil

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys

Apologies in advance as I don't know my way around cars / engines and component names.

The 205 has had a GTI-6 conversion which has a K&N filter. The filter was looking particularly grubby so I thought I'd clean it today.

When I removed the filter from the pipe / hose connecting it to the throttle body I found it had a light coating of oil on the inside as did the pipe it was connected to. So I removed this pipe from the throttle body and it had a blob of creamy gunk inside it near the throttle body end. So I cleaned the filter and the pipe and also cleaned the MAP sensor and Idle control valve which also had a light coating of oil.

I then removed the pipe that comes from the top of the engine to the throttle body (think its called the rocker breather hose) from the throttle body and it was full of water. When I removed it form the engine it was full of creamy gunk.

I cleaned everything up as best I could and put everything back together and took the car for a spin and it was sounding and feeling / driving much better but I'm thinking the creamy gunk in the breather pipe and oil coating in the intake may be signs of something bad?

Thx

Anthony

The light coating of oil is fairly normal as the breathers will contain oil vapour.

The mayo is probably not too concerning if the car doesn't get used on many long journeys where the oil gets fully up to temperature. If there's mayo on the dipstick and/or you're losing coolant with no sign of a leak though you should be concerned.

Pheeww.

Not noticed any mayo on the dipstick or loss of coolant. I had a quick look at a 306 forum and it appears a lot of members were adding catch tanks. Is this a worthwhile upgrade? Other than oil covering the sensors is there any harm venting oil fumes back into the air intake?
